The Southern Filly of the Year Series is an important part of the Southern Racing Calendar. It is designed to assist the longterm growth and success of the New Zealand breeding industry by providing opportunities for good fillies to earn valuable black type while racing in New Zealand.

The title of New Zealand Bloodstock Southern Filly of the Year is awarded to the three-year-old filly who succeeds in winning the most points after the completion of the four races in the Series.
Points are awarded for first, second and third in each race with:
- 7 points for first,
- 3 points for second, and
- 1 point for third.
The races are all of Listed status and the series starts with a 1200m race in September and finishes with a 2000m race in April/May.
Past winners in the Series include 2000-01 winner Besty Coup (Justice Prevails x Gay Sonnet), 2002-03 winner Tonic (Blues Traveller x Sent To War), 2005-06 winner Ombre Rose (O'Reilly x Lady Chanele), 2007-08 winner Belmont Cat (Felix The Cat x Morgan Glory) and 2008-09 winner Bird (Danasinga x Quiescent). The 2011-12 Series was won by Ortem Fire (Gallant Guru x Emerald Fire).
New Zealand Bloodstock has a strong commitment to encouraging a healthy and successful domestic racing industry in New Zealand and by sponsoring this coveted Series is working to ensure the owners, breeders and trainers in the New Zealand racing and breeding industry are attractively rewarded.
