Buyers Snap Up Last Chances to Enter the Karaka Million at NZB South Island Sale

17 April 2015

The 2015 edition of New Zealand Bloodstock’s South Island Sale concluded this afternoon with the top three purchases now entered in the 2016 Karaka Million Series.

50

Lot 50 was purchased by Shailer Thoroughbreds for $82,500.

The top price of the day came at Lot 50, a colt catalogued in NZB’s National Yearling Sales Series: South Island Session section of the Sale. The colt by hot young sire Per Incanto, already the sire of a Group 1 winner from his only crop to race, was purchased by Paul Shailer of Shailer Thoroughbreds for $82,500 from Berkley Stud.

The son of Per Incanto is out of unraced Silver Cent (Centaine) and is a half-brother to stakes placegetter Posh Bec (Le Bec Fin), runner-up in the Listed Soliloquy Stakes.

“He was the standout horse in the Sale, both on type and pedigree,” commented Paul Shailer. “I think he was an obvious choice which was indicated with the interest that surrounded him including Bryce Tankard (Waikato Bloodstock).

“I think he will be a precocious horse who is by an in form sire and is bred on a similar cross to Dal Cielo. He will be a Karaka Million horse and we will have shares available for anyone interested.”

The second leading sire of two-year-olds in New Zealand, Per Incanto has enjoyed a fruitful season with his progeny, including stakes winners Dal Cielo (NZ) (Per Incanto), winner of the Group 1 Diamond Stakes, and Rocanto (NZ) (Per Incanto), winner of the Listed Matamata Slipper Stakes.

Along with Shailer’s leading purchase, Lot 90 and Lot 65, the next two highest priced lots of the Sale, both purchased by NZB as agent, have been entered in the Karaka Million Series.

Shailer Thoroughbreds, operated by Paul and Kris Shailer who train out of Matamata, ended the Sale as the leading individual buyer going home with two yearlings. Joining their top buy was a colt by Coats Choice out of O’Reilly mare O’Tryst, Lot 28, purchased for $12,000 also from Berkley Stud’s draft.

The second leading buyer at the Sale was Eion Sullivan, purchasing for an Indonesian client. Sullivan purchased three horses for a total of $56,000.

New Zealand buyers accounted for 60% of the total spend at the Sale while buyers from Australia, Singapore, Macau, Indonesia and Hong Kong all featured on the buyers list.

“There was good competition for the quality horses, in particular the top lot by hot sire Per Incanto,” commented NZB’s Bloodstock Sales Manager Danny Rolston. “There was an enthusiastic local buying bench competing for the quality horses.”

Edwina Morris and Alan Jones’ Berkley Stud was the leading vendor by aggregate, finishing with a total of $152,000 at an average of $15,200, selling all of their 10 horses. Their second top lot was purchased for $24,000 by NZB as agent. Catalogued at Lot 10, the colt by Coats Choice is a full-brother to stakes winner and South Island Sale graduate Milo (NZ) (Coats Choice).

The leading vendor by average (three or more sold) was Stu & Sue McGiffert’s Three Valleys, selling six horses at an average of $16,417. Lot 72 and Lot 74 from Three Valleys were both purchased for $22,000, bought by Sullivan and Te Akau Racing respectively.

Leading the sires by average (three or more sold) list was Falkirk, selling all three of his entries at an average of $18,667. Falkirk’s highest price yearling came at Lot 91, purchased by Sullivan for $25,000 from Mansfield Farm.

With 69 fewer horses catalogued this year, the Sale saw 63 horses sell for an aggregate of $655,250 at an average of $10,401. The median closed at $6,000 with the clearance rate at 64%.

All yearlings purchased at the South Island Sale are eligible to be nominated for the Karaka Million Series with entries closing at 5pm on 18 May.
