Another Son of Tavistock is Chasing a Derby

30 November 2015

Tavistock looks to have another exciting three-year-old set for a Derby campaign with Tavago (NZ) (Tavistock) impressively winning the $70,000 Group 3 Fasttrackinsurance Wellington Stakes (1600m) at Otaki on Friday.

“We’ve got the Derby in the back of our minds,” commented co-trainer Natalie Young. “He’s a real staying type.”

Already the sire of the Group 1 Victoria Derby winner Tarzino (NZ) (Tavistock) this season, Tavistock has 50 yearlings entered at Karaka 2016 including 17 in the Premier Sale.

The win of Tavago has also added to the pedigree of Lot 55 in the Premier Sale from Cambridge Stud, a half-brother by Ocean Park to the now Group 3 winner.

Tavago strong winner at his last start over 1600m at Te Rapa after being runner-up on debut for trainers Trent Busuttin and Young.

“He had to do a lot of work early and he grew another leg that last bit,” added Young. “He’s a really nice horse in the making, very exciting.”

Beginning from barrier 10 for rider Danielle Johnson, Tavago improved quickly to travel in behind the speed. Racing through the centre of the field as they turned for home, he challenged the leaders in the final moments and snatched victory by a short head over Shadows Cast (NZ) (Per Incanto) and Zacada (NZ) (Zabeel) who finished in second and third place respectively.

Friday’s win has boosted his prizemoney to $48,275 for owners K R Banks, Mrs P Hatchard, S C Oldfield and R L Taylor.

The three-year-old gelding was purchased at the 2014 Karaka Premier Sale for $60,000 by Craig Oldfield from Cambridge Stud.

Bred by Sir Patrick Hogan and Lady Hogan, Mrs C A and J H Kelly, Tavago is out of Sara Ann (Stravinsky) who is a full-sister to stakes winner La Sizeranne (Stravinsky), winner of the Group 2 Winter Stakes. He is from the same family as three-time Group 1 winner and successful sire Grosvenor (Sir Tristram).

New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Yearling Sales Series will take place from 25 January – 31 January at Karaka. The catalogue can be viewed online or can be requested from [email protected]
