Strong Field for Seventh Leg of NZB’s Filly of the Year Series

The seventh leg of New Zealand Bloodstock’s Filly of the Year Series will run this Saturday at Te Rapa with the Group 2 $100,000 Cambridge Stud Sir Tristram Fillies Classic (2000m).

This leg of the 10 race Series features 13 fillies looking to accumulate points towards the coveted NZB Filly of the Year title in the 2015-16 season.

The winner of the Group 2 $100,000 Cambridge Stud Sir Tristram Fillies Classic will earn 8 Series points with second place earning 4 points and third 2 points. 

The field includes three winners from this season’s NZB Filly of the Year Series so far. Coldplay (NZ) (Savabeel) won the Group 3 Eulogy Stakes, Capella (NZ) (Rip Van Winkle) won the Group 2 Eight Carat Classic and Duchess Kate (NZ) (Savabeel) the latest leg, the Group 3 Desert Gold Stakes.

Currently in third equal place in the NZB Filly of the Year Series is Capella (NZ) (Rip Van Winkle), with 8 points. The daughter of Rip Van Winkle will be one of the favourites after her brilliant performance when taking out leg four of the Series, the Group 2 Eight Carat Classic on Boxing Day.

Bella Court (NZ) (Per Incanto), is becoming a frequent bridesmaid with five second placings. Currently fifth equal with 6 points in the Series after placings in the Group 3 Eulogy Stakes and the Group 3 Desert Gold Stakes. She was purchased for $37,000 by her trainer Lisa Latta at the 2014 Karaka Festival Sale (Lot 1314).

Consistent performer, Mime (NZ) (Mastercraftsman), has won once and finished second on five occasions from eight starts. Her only unplaced run was in the Group 1 New Zealand 1000 Guineas.

Megawatt (NZ) (Shocking), is the winner of one of seven starts. She ran third in the fifth leg of the Filly of the Year Series, the Group 2 Royal Stakes on New Year’s Day. She was purchased by her owners KRD Racing Pty Ltd for $10,000 at the 2014 Karaka Festival Sale (Lot 1350).

Cambridge trainer, Roger James, believes his Zabeel filly Cool Tart (NZ) is up to Group 1 level. A last start winner at Te Rapa over 2100 metres, she finished seventh in her previous start, the Group 2 Royal Stakes.

Preetha Varma (NZ) (Keeper), ran fifth in the Group 2 Eight Carat two starts back and a game second at her last start. She has yet to race further than 1600m.

Lance Noble trained Fame Seeker (NZ) (Showcasing) has been competitive in three races of the Filly of the Year Series, with a third placing in the Group 3 Eulogy Stakes, giving her 1.5 points. She was purchased by her trainer for $90,000 at the 2014 Karaka Premier Sale (Lot 440).

The daughter of Shocking, Fanatic (NZ) is a winner of one of nine starts. She has yet to race past 1600m and this will be her first run in the Filly of the Year Series. Blinkers will be applied for the first time.
