The popularity of the Kiwi thoroughbred was again evident today with the buoyancy in the market continuing throughout Day One of New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Weanling, Broodmare and Mixed Bloodstock Sale.

Massive gains were recorded across the board, the highlight being a 188% increase in the median price to $11,500 from $4,000 last year and an 85% increase in the average to $22,709 (up from $12,302). The day one aggregate settled at $2,952,200, up $1,168,450 on last year’s opener and this with 15 less horses contributing to the figure.

The strong demand that drove the record figures also saw the clearance rate finish up at 87%.

NZB Managing Director Andrew Seabrook was thrilled with the results “The product we are producing continues to perform in some of the world’s toughest racing jurisdictions and the staggering results we have seen here today are not only good for our vendors but for the industry as a whole.”

As predicted young stock by Cambridge Stud’s hot young sire Tavistock (NZ) (Montjeu) were popular with his colt at Lot 40 providing the highest price of the day. From the Curraghmore draft, he is out of Sentura (NZ) (Volksraad) and from the family of Group One winners Clifton Prince (NZ) (Volksraad) and Clifton King (NZ) (Volksraad). The exciting pin-hooking prospect was hand-picked by some of the best in the business with Mark and Shelley Treweek’s Lyndhurst Farm pleased to have secured him “He has a great walk and a great way about him and being by Tavistock is obviously a big attraction,” commented Mark.

“He’s got a lovely pedigree and is out of a Volksraad mare which is a proven cross already with Tavistock.”

“Nine times out of 10 Curraghmore sell the best horses out of the weanling sale and we picked him as the nicest type in the sale. He ticked a lot of boxes for us and we had to have him.”

Leading vendor of the day by average and aggregate was Curraghmore, who have done so at this sale for the past 10 years with proprietor Gordon Cunningham pleased to again be leading the way “We brought a quality draft to this sale again and expected our horses to sell well. The interest we’d had leading into the sale was good and that’s translated into results today that we’re delighted with.”

Rider Horse NZ were the most active of the day’s buyers, securing 20 lots for total receipts of $498,000 and striking early to secure Lot 9. From Dan Myers’ popular weanling draft the I Am Invincible filly is the first foal from the handy imported mare Pipette and fetched $130,000. In addition to the strong domestic buying bench which accounted for 81% of purchases, investors from Australia, Hong Kong and Singapore were also active.

Selling continues tomorrow starting with more Weanlings from Lot 171 at 10am through to Yearlings, Two-Year-Olds, Unraced stock and Racehorses. Supplementary weanling lots will follow on from the Weanling Session and Mixed Bloodstock supplementary lots will follow on from the Racehorses Session. The full Broodmare offering and Stallion Shares will then conclude the Sale on Wednesday from 10am.

Printed catalogues are available from Reception at the Sales Complex or can be viewed online.
