Strong Start to NZB 2014 Select Sale

29 January 2014

The first day of New Zealand Bloodstock’s Select Sale has seen some competitive bidding for the 231 yearlings on offer today, resulting in slight increases to all the figures compared to the first day last year.

Day 3 Topper

Dan O'Donnell & Rodney Schick with the day's top Lot 674.

With 231 of the 612 Select Sale yearlings catalogued for Day 1 of the three-day session, 151 were sold for $7,378,500, at an average of $48,864 (up 3.4%) and a median of $40,000 (up 2.6%). Encouragingly the clearance rate sits at 72% compared with 69% at the end of the first day last year.

With the highlight lots bookending today’s session, the top price came towards the end of the day at Lot 674, purchased by Hong Kong based Dan O’Donnell for $190,000 from Windsor Park Stud. The colt by Dylan Thomas is out of Montjeu mare Mon Beau Cheval, a daughter of dual Group 1 Prized Gem making her a full-sister to Group 1 Australian Derby winner Nom du Jeu (Montjeu).

“Most horses are just horses but every so often there is one with a little bit extra and he has that. He has an individual personality, he is relaxed and moves very smoothly,” commented O’Donnell.

“Essentially he has a stayers pedigree but with his dam being a Montjeu mare he should perform over shorter distances as Montjeu has an element of electricity to his offspring. I purchased Blazing Speed who recently won the Stewards’ Cup in Hong Kong over 1600m and he is bred on the same cross as this colt.

“He will remain in New Zealand for two years and will likely be owned by Mr Simon Kwok who I also purchased Beauty Flash for.”

The second top price of $165,000 was supplied by just the second lot through the ring, purchased by Lisa Latta Racing Stables. Catalogued at Lot 472, the colt by Domesday is the first foal of winning Fastnet Rock mare Fastnet Lady, offered by The Oaks Stud.

Continuing the theme of the Premier Sale, domestic buyers stepped up their activity again here, accounting for 56% of turnover, up from 53% in 2013.

Te Akau Racing’s David Ellis continued his spending frenzy purchasing six more yearlings for a total of $284,000 to add to the 35 bought at the Premier Sale, retaining his leading buyer title that he acquired at the Premier Sale earlier in the week.

Ellis headed a strong domestic buying bench that had seven New Zealand buyers feature in the top 10 individual purchasers of the day, including Lisa Latta Racing Stables, Wexford Stables, Bruce Perry Bloodstock, Rogerson Bloodstock, Murray Baker Racing and Paul Moroney Bloodstock.

A broad selection of international buyers have stayed on site from the Premier Sale, including Ger Beemsterboer of the Netherlands – part-owner of NZB Filly of the Year Planet Rock - the third leading purchaser of the day with four horses bought for a total of $230,000.  Beemsterboer also purchased two yearlings at the Premier Sale.

Australian buyers have also continued their activity, purchasing 22 horses for $1,273,000 at an average of $57,863, with LB Racing, John Foote, John Morrisey and Peter Moody all spending over $100,000.

Hong Kong based buyers were strongly represented, purchasing 14 horses for a total of $1,130,000. Cambridge based Waikato Bloodstock, purchasing for Hong Kong clients, finished the day as the second leading buyer with three yearlings purchased for $235,000.

The leading vendor by aggregate was Westbury Stud with 10 horses sold for an aggregate of $649,000 at an average of $64,900. Westbury has 32 yearlings catalogued for sale over the remaining two days of the Select Sale, including a large representation from their freshman sire Makfi and their second season sires Swiss Ace and Red Giant.

The leading vendor by average (with three or more sold) is currently Dick Karreman’s The Oaks Stud, selling eight yearlings for a total of $644,500 at an average of $80,563. The highest priced yearling sold by The Oaks Stud was the second highest price of the day paid for Lot 472. Their resident sire Bachelor Duke is enjoying a good sale, with a top price of $110,000 paid by John Morrisey (NSW) for Lot 518, and six sold for the second-highest average of $70,000.

Champion sire O’Reilly heads the sires list with four Lots sold for $372,500 at an average of $93,125. Waikato Stud’s resident sire had a top price of $130,000 for Lot 543, purchased by Mr WC Lim of Malaysia from the Premier Sale’s leading vendor.

Freshman sire Rip Van Winkle continues to sell well as he is leading first season sire at this session so far, with four entries selling for a total of $230,000 at an average of $57,500.

Selling continues from Lot 701 to 920 tomorrow from 11am at Karaka.  All lots will be streamed live online at www.nzb.co.nz
