A strong final day has concluded New Zealand Bloodstock’s 88th National Yearling Sales Series at Karaka, with the one-day Festival Sale posting increases across all key statistics.

The average price of $14,210 for the session is an increase of 17% from $12,117 last year, with the median increasing 25% to $10,000. The clearance was a five-year high of 81%, up from 73% last year.

Lot 1272 was purchased by Brookby Stables for $77,500.

With a smaller catalogue of 290 Lots, 150 less than in 2013, 207 were sold today for $2,941,500, compared with $3,429,200 for the 283 sold across two-days last year.

In all, there were 1372 yearlings catalogued over six days of selling at Karaka 2014, 120 less than last year and no seven-figure sale, 959 have sold for $69,652,000 compared with $72,387,700 for 64 more lots sold in 2013.

The consistent strength throughout the week is reflected in an overall clearance rate of 78%  - the highest since a record 83% in 2008 - with the average and median both ahead of last year’s figures at $72,630 (up 2.4%) and $45,000 (up 12.5%).

The highest price of the day came at Lot 1272, the colt by Bachelor Duke purchased by Danny Walker of Brookby Stables for $77,500. Offered by Westend Partnership, the colt is by the sire of recent Group 1 winner Shuka, and is half-brother to four winners.

“He’s just a lovely horse, a big, athletic nice type of horse. He sold himself really,” commented Danny Walker. “We’ll more than likely keep him. I’ll break him in and assess it from there.

“I missed out on one earlier in the day but I thought that this horse was twice as good and I’m very pleased to have got him.”

Brookby Stables was the second leading buyer of the Festival Sale, purchasing four horses for a total of $113,500.

With the domestic market strong right throughout the week, the top ten Festival Sale buyers are exclusively NZ-based, with Rogerson Bloodstock heading the list. Graeme and Debbie Rogerson have been active throughout all three Sale sessions, finishing as the third leading buyer at the Premier Sale and the second leading individual buyer at the Select Sale.

Overall Rogerson Bloodstock has been the second leading buyer of the Sale Series, with 32 yearlings purchased for $2,910,000, including the highest price of the Sale of $800,000 paid for Lot 73. The leading buyer for the week was David Ellis of Te Akau Racing, purchasing 42 horses for $6,411,500, with 35 of those horses purchased at the Premier Sale.

Young bloodstock agent Glen Harvey has made a big impression in his purchasing debut this sales season, with four horses bought under his solo banner today for $109,000, and another two in conjunction with Paul Moroney & Leon Corstens respectively, to bring his total Festival purchases to six horses for $171,000.

The second top lot of the day was Lot 1293, a colt by Shocking purchased by The Robt Dawe Agency for $56,000 from Lyndhurst Farm. The colt highlights the prominence of first season sires throughout the week, consistently among the top Lots, with the third-equal highest prices at the Select Sale by Rip Van Winkle and Per Incanto. Shocking himself has made a strong start to his sale ring career, with his 37 entries across the Sales Series averaging $55,656 with a top price of $160,000 (Lot 837).

The Festival Sale’s sires table was headed by Bachelor Duke with three yearlings sold at an average of $30,667. The Oaks Stud sire was also received well at the Select Sale where eight sold at an average price of $61,125 and a top price of $110,000 (Lot 518).

Closely in second was Little Avondale’s freshman sire Per Incanto, who also had a strong Select Sale with 12 horses sold for an average of $51,455, with three horses today bringing his Sale week average to $49,250.

The leading first season sire for the combined Sale Series was Rip Van Winkle with 51 yearlings selling at an average of $96,431, ahead of Makfi who had 21 Lots sell for an average of $83,476.

The leading vendor by aggregate at the Festival Sale was Westbury Stud with 24 yearlings sold for $567,000 at an average of $23,625. A mammoth week for Westbury Stud saw its 110 yearlings showcase the Stud’s resident sires Red Giant, Postponed and Swiss Ace, with all three finishing on the top 10 sires list today.

Providing the top lot of the day, Peter & Sue Westend’s Westend Partnership was the leading vendor by average, selling three horses at an average of $30,000 with an aggregate of $90,000.

Waikato Stud remains as the leading vendor for the combined Sale Series with 65 horses sold for a total of $8,873,000, a strong statement from the Stud who dedicated its entire yearling draft to Karaka 2014.

NZB Co-Managing Director Petrea Vela says the renewed strength of the local market has been one of the highlights of Karaka 2014.

“We’re extremely pleased to post results in line with last year, with notable gains made across the Select and Festival Sales. The New Zealand presence throughout the week has been significant to the Sale and is a very encouraging sign of renewed confidence.

“A huge thank you and congratulations to everyone who has participated this week, particularly our broad international buying bench who made the journey to Auckland. We wish everyone the very best of success with their Karaka purchases.”
