Zabeel Mares Highlight NZB Broodmare Sale

A prime opportunity for new players to enter the breeding game and for existing breeders to expand their portfolio is presented by New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Broodmare Sale, next week (13 May) at Karaka.

There are 209 broodmares catalogued for sale by leading damsires from New Zealand, Australia and further afield, in foal to proven and exciting young sires.

One of the highlights of the Sale will be the 12 broodmare entries by legendary sire Zabeel. The recently retired Cambridge Stud stallion is the damsire of 24 individual Group 1 winners including Dundeel (High Chaparral), Atlantic Jewel (Fastnet Rock), Silent Achiever (O’Reilly), Go Indy Go (Bernardini) and O’Marilyn (O’Reilly) this season.

Among the Zabeel mares on offer are:

  • Lot 489 Athenri – The dam of Group 1 Queensland Derby winner Shootoff (Duelled). Served by Iffraaj.
  • Lot 348 J’Abeel – The dam of Listed winner Baby Guinness (Stravinsky) from the family of Denise’s Joy being offered for unreserved sale. Served by Power.
  • Lot 482 Alpine – The dam of Listed Wairarapa Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes winner Vercors (Catbird). Served by Rip Van Winkle.

A range of successful broodmare sires will be represented at the Sale including Centaine, Danehill, Nashwan, Red Ransom, Redoute’s Choice, Stravinsky, Success Express, Volksraad and Woodman. Their entries include:

  • Lot 503 Cabazon (Redoute’s Choice) – Listed Strutt Stakes winner in Australia. Served by Fully Fledged.
  • Lot 354 Keep Smiling (Stravinsky) – Daughter of Group 1 Wellington Cup winner Smiling Like (Star Way). Served by Tavistock.
  • Lot 478 Zino Belle (Success Express) – Group 3 Gold Trail Stakes winner and the dam of the promising Silver Eclipse (Darci Brahma). Served by Darci Brahma.
  • Lot 365 Les Miserables (Volksraad) – Half-sister to dual Group 3 winner and current performer Floria (Savabeel) out of Listed placegettter Aria (Centaine). Served by Iffraaj.
  • Lot 380 Meranti (Woodman) – Daughter of Group 1 winner Hold That Smile (Haulpak) and dam of five winners from five runners, being offered for unreserved sale. Served by Burgundy.
  • Lot 523 Cruz Control (Centaine) – The dam of the Sgp-3 placed Silveron Wings (Black Minnaloushe) out of Australian Group 3 winner Soda Springs.

  • Reliable Man (Dalahkani) – Group 1 winner in both hemispheres with one entry in the Sale (Lot 369).
  • Rock ‘n’ Pop (Fastnet Rock) – Group 1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas winner, with six entries, including Lot 419, the dam of Group 2 placed two-year-old Queen Boudicca (Perfectly Ready).

New Zealand Bloodstock’s two-day National Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale is at Karaka on 12 & 13 May. The first day of selling commences with the Weanling Session on Monday 12 May. The second day of the Sale (Tuesday 13 May) features the Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock sessions.
