Good Demand on Day 2 of NZB’s National Weanling, Broodmare and Mixed Bloodstock Sale

12 May 2015

The weanling session of New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale has wrapped up today with a solid two days of trade at Karaka.

A total of 350 weanlings were offered with 250 selling for a total aggregate of $3,028,300, increasing from $2,656,450 recorded at last year’s Sale. The clearance rate finished at 80% for the National Weanling Sale, compared with 79% last year, with an average of $12,113 and a median of $4,000.

“There was continued demand today for horses with commercial value that we might see back at Karaka in the future,” commented NZB’s Bloodstock Sales Manager Danny Rolston. “Congratulations must go to the vendors and their staff who supported the sale with genuine prospects and they were duly rewarded.”

The sire of the two highest priced weanlings sold today was Tavistock, making him the leading sire by average (three or more sold). Tavistock, whose oldest progeny are only three-year-olds, had seven weanlings sell for an average of $37,357, with his highest priced weanling fetching $90,000, the top price on Day 2 in the weanling session.

Purchased by NZB as agent, Lot 216 from Brighthill Farm fetched the highest price of the day of $90,000. She is out of All by Myself, a daughter of the great sire Zabeel. All by Myself is a half-sister to stakes-winner Single (High Chaparral).

The top price of the Sale was recorded yesterday with Bruce Perry Bloodstock purchasing Lot 112, a filly by Mastercraftsman who is a half-sister to Group 1 winner Suavito (Thorn Park). The second highest price of the Sale was Lot 54, a filly by Rip Van Winkle purchased by Curraghmore Stud for $120,000.

Lyndhurst Farm, successful National Yearling Sales Series and Ready to Run Sale vendor, had a productive day buying. They purchased two weanlings for $80,000 today, the second highest prices of the day. The first being Lot 213, a colt by Tavistock from Brighthill Farm. The second, Lot 327, a colt by freshman sire Ocean Park from Currgahmore Stud.

Lyndhurst Farm secured five lots over the two days of selling, placing them as the leading individual buyer of the National Weanling Sale with a total spend of $310,500. Along with Lot 213 and Lot 327, Lyndhurst Farm purchased colts by Per Incanto, Burgundy and a second Tavistock.

“We looked at the catalogue and saw some horses that we really liked,” commented Mark Treweek. “We felt like they were good value for money, with a couple being from proven sires and some from first season sires.

“Buying good types out of the right sort of families makes it that much easier to move them on as yearlings.”

Bruce Perry Bloodstock is the second leading buyer after securing the top Lot of the Sale (Lot 112). Bruce Perry was active again on Day 2, purchasing Dancer's Tale, Lot 403, from the racehorse section of the Sale for $120,000.

A daughter of Tale of the Cat, Dancer’s Tale was a winner at her last start just two weeks ago. She had previously won the Listed Welcome Stakes as a two-year-old and ran a further third place in the Listed Wellesley Stakes, also as a juvenile.

“She’ll be retired and go to Per Incanto,” commented Bruce Perry.” I bought her for Homebush Breeding Partnership, a partnership that we’ve just set up and she’s our second purchase.

“I bought the mother years ago for Graham Bax so I know the family well.”

Following hot on the heels of Tavistock in the leading sires by average (three or more sold) is Waikato Stud’s first season sire Ocean Park.  Selling all 11 of his weanlings that were offered, they recorded an average of $37,227. The top price of Ocean Park was Lot 327, a colt bought for $80,000, one of Lyndhurst Farm’s purchases today.

This year’s first season sires were among the most popular of the sires in this year’s edition of the weanling session, with Niagara, Azamour and Super Easy all sitting in the top five with Ocean Park.

Gordon Cunningham’s Curraghmore Stud had another prosperous National Weanling Sale, finishing as the leading vendor by aggregate for tenth consecutive year.

“I am surprised that we were the leading vendor this year given our smaller offering,” commented Cunningham. “It is a great credit to all of the staff who have worked at Curraghmore over the years”

“I am very grateful to the clients of Curraghmore who have had the faith to offer quality weanlings at this Sale and consider it a serious trading option. We are very fortunate that people return to the Sale year after year to compete strongly to secure Curraghmore raised yearlings."

Selling nine horses, Curraghmore Stud concluded with a total aggregate of $375,500 at an average of $41,722, the second leading draft by average. Curraghmore Stud’s top price came at Lot 101, a filly by freshman sire Pierro out of stakes placegetter Prestigious Miss (Written Tycoon), purchased by American buyer Roderick Wachman for $110,000, the third top price of the Sale.

Trelawney Stud came in as the leading vendor by average (three or more sold), selling four weanlings for an average of $49,750. They produced the top price of the Sale with Lot 112 when it was purchased for $160,000.

Later in the day attention turned to the mixed sessions on offer with yearlings, two-year-olds, unraced stock and racehorses going through the ring.  Of the 63 catalogued lots, the highlight came in the racehorse section with Lot 403 selling for $120,000.

The final day of selling is tomorrow, commencing with 187 Lots catalogued for the National Broodmare Sale beginning at 11am. Selling is concluded with four stallion shares to be offered.
