Further Increases at NZB National Weanling & Broodmare Sale

Increases to the aggregate, average and median at today's broodmare session highlighted a successful second and final day of New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale.

There were 220 broodmares catalogued this year, 12 less than 2013, with 136 selling for $1,169,950 at a clearance rate of 79%. This figure showed an increase of 14% from last year’s $1,026,900. The strong turnover saw the average price rise 26% from the 2013 figure to $8,603 and the median saw an impressive increase of 108% to $3,325.
The top price of $80,000 was paid by Wellfield Holdings for broodmare Quatro catalogued at Lot 416 from Blandford Lodge. The Rock of Gibraltar mare is a daughter of Group 1 AJC Oaks winner My Brilliant Star (Copper Kingdom) and a half-sister to Group 1 Toorak Handicap winner Shot of Thunder (Thunder Gulch).
Wellfield Holdings also purchased the third highest priced lot of the day (Lot 444) for $60,000, taking them to the top of the buyers list.
Bill Gleeson of Wellfield Lodge was pleased with today’s top purchase.
“First and foremost she’s a stunning mare and a super type and she has a good Australian-based pedigree that we liked. Considering the sales that we’ve already attended this year we’ve found that there is tremendous value to be had at Karaka if you do your homework.
“She will be going to Alamosa, we’ve been buying a number of mares that are going to suit our stallions including recent purchases of Shez Sinsational and Fantastic Honour and are fortunate to have a number of clients supporting this process and our stallions.”
It has been a busy two days for Wellfield Holdings who also purchased two weanlings yesterday at Karaka including an O’Reilly colt (Lot 47) for $70,000. They finished as the leading purchaser for the combined Sale with four purchases totalling $246,000.
The leading vendor of the broodmare session by aggregate and average today was Blandford Lodge with 10 broodmares sold for $278,900 at an average of $27,890. Blandford Lodge were responsible for the top two lots in the broodmare session with Lot 416 topping the Sale and Lot 525 fetching $75,000 when purchased by Dan Myers, the second highest price of the day. Both of the top two lots were sold on behalf of Sir Owen Glenn’s Go Bloodstock NZ.
“We found we had quality horses that appealed to the buyers,” commented Blandford Lodge’s Graham Bax. “When combined with good conformation and pedigrees, buyers tended to go that extra mile to secure them.”
The mixed bloodstock session saw yearlings, two-year-olds, unraced stock, horses-in-training and racehorses go under the hammer. The top lot came in the form of unraced filly Bella O’Reilly (Lot 311) when sold for $10,500.
The reduced two-day Sale this year provided strong competition with pleasing increases to key statistics. A total of 571 horses were catalogued, down from 668 last year. There were 369 horses sold for an aggregate of $3,920,400, up from $3,873,000 last year despite 89 less horses being sold. The average rose by 26% to $10,624 and the median showed significant improvement to reach $5,000 which is over twice last year’s figure of $2,250.
“We saw a flow-on effect from a healthy weanling market yesterday in the broodmare session with the average and median both posting good rises,” commented NZB Bloodstock Sales Manager Danny Rolston.
“There were a number of mares that inspected very well and when that matched up with pedigree and performance the market was very competitive.
“We thank buyers and vendors for their support and wish them all the best for the breeding season.”
