Record-breaking results were the order of the day at the 2016 edition of New Zealand Bloodstock’s South Island Sale proving demand for the Southern product is stronger than ever.

Dramatic increases across the key measures saw clearance skyrocket to 92% this year while the all-important median increased 150% to $15,000 from $6,000 last year. A 121% increase in the aggregate saw total receipts of $1,447,100 taken for the 83 horses that found new homes, leading to an average of $17,435 (up from $10,401 last year).

New Zealand Bloodstock Managing Director Andrew Seabrook was thrilled with the results.

“For any sale to double its turnover and see the average, median and clearance rate increase by such large margins is spectacular.

“The future of this Sale has now well and truly been cemented and to see international buyers such as the China Horse Club, John Foote, Darren Dance, Liam Birchley, Eion Sullivan, Stephen Chow, among others, shows that there is still strong demand for the Southern product.

“With the support of the South Island breeders and vendors, we will look to grow this Sale even further next year,” said Seabrook.

The price highlight came at Lot 76 with White Robe Lodge’s strapping son of resident sire, Raise the Flag, attracting feverish bidding to eventually be knocked down to Kevin Myers for $52,500.

The result added to White Robe’s standing as the leading vendor by aggregate at the sale and according to Wayne Stewart the colt is typical of the type of horse they aim to bring to the Southern showpiece.

“We made sure we had a draft that boasted quality stock from winning mares and good families.

“We didn’t do anything different in terms of the preparation of our horses however we saved our whole yearling crop for this sale and I believe this gave the buyers confidence that we came to this sale with our best horses.

“The timing and new venue also made for a pleasant selling experience for everyone,” commented Stewart.

Leading buyer by aggregate, Michael Wallace for China Horse Club, found plenty of opportunity to fill his order.

“We came to secure the type of sound Southern horses that the region is renowned for producing and found good quality and value on offer.”

Malaysian based agent Eion Sullivan was the second leading buyer and returned hopeful of more success.

“Last year we purchased three yearlings to grow out in New Zealand and then race in Singapore. Those purchases have turned out to be great investments and we aim to do the same with this year’s purchases.

“Although I’m not usually a yearling buyer there are nice, affordable horses to be found here,” said Sullivan.

Having celebrated their exciting young sire Zacinto’s first winner this week after Ugo Foscolo’s impressive debut victory, Inglewood Stud’s good fortune continued with their resident son of Dansili. Zacinto was the leading sire with five selling for an average of $23,600 with the farm also topping the leading vendor by average table.

All yearlings purchased at the South Island Sale are eligible to be nominated for NZB’s enhanced Karaka Million Series with entries closing at 5pm on Monday 16 May.
