Civil Disobedience (NZ) Captures Tasmanian Derby

10 February 2018

Kiwi-bred colt Civil Disobedience (NZ) (Raise the Flag) stepped up to stakes level in style with a commanding win in Friday’s A$150,000 Listed Tasmanian Derby (2200m) in Hobart.

From the stable of champion Victorian trainer Darren Weir, and ridden by John Allen, the $32,500 South Island Sale graduate outclassed his Tasmanian Derby opponents. He sat in third place before effortlessly taking the lead at the home turn and powering clear to win by two and three-quarter lengths.

The win was Civil Disobedience’s fourth from 10 starts, with all four of those victories coming in his last six appearances. The Tasmanian Derby was his first attempt at black-type level. He has now pocketed prizemoney of A$212,390 – more than six times his purchase price.

Civil Disobedience is now likely to return to the country of his birth for the $1 million Group 1 Vodafone New Zealand Derby (2400m) at Ellerslie on March 3.

The win was a timely boost for the South Island Sale, with the 2018 edition now just around the corner on April 20.
