Devise (NZ) (Darci Brahma) could have been bought for $175,000 at the 2015 Premier Sale, and she is worth considerably more than that after winning Saturday’s $200,000 Group 1 Haunui Farm WFA Classic (1600m) at Hastings.

A well-bred half-sister to Group 1 performer Zurella (NZ) (Zabeel), Devise had already shown plenty of talent with a string of black-type placings including the Group 1 New Zealand Oaks (2400m).

But she took a giant leap forward in Saturday’s star-studded weight-for-age feature, sprinting impressively out of midfield to score a half-length win over the Group 1-winning mare Consensus (NZ) (Postponed).

“She really does deserve it,” trainer Shaune Ritchie said. “Bonneval (NZ) (Makfi) not being here today obviously helped us, she's been bridesmaid to her a couple of times.

“I’m just delighted for the horse. She always puts in her best.”

Devise is raced by her breeders The Oaks Stud, who offered her as Lot 359 at the 2015 Premier Sale but she fell short of her $175,000 reserve.

The mare has now had 14 starts for four wins, six placings and prizemoney of $282,799.

“We all know how much Dick Karreman and The Oaks Stud put into racing and breeding, so this is a great result for them,” Ritchie said. “She’s got that Group One weight-for-age win now, which has secured her future as a broodmare.”
