Respin (NZ) comes out on top in a thrilling four-way photo finish in the NZB Insurance Stakes.

Respin (NZ) (Power) thrust herself into New Zealand Bloodstock Southern Filly of the Year contention with victory in a thrilling four-way photo finish in Saturday’s $50,000 Listed NZB Insurance Stakes (1600m) at Riccarton.

Making her first appearance in the Southern Filly Series, Respin sat well back in the field before sprinting to the lead 200 metres from the finish.

Beneficial (NZ) (Highly Recommended), Courte Zarindi (NZ) (Any Suggestion) and Greenpark Gem (NZ) (Highly Recommended) charged home out wide, with Respin fighting hard on the inside. The four fillies were all in a line as they hit the finish.

Respin was confirmed as the winner by a nose from Beneficial, with a nose to Courte Zarindi in third and another nose to Greenpark Gem fourth.

Respin is owned by Hall of Fame trainer Jim Gibbs and his wife Ann, and she was bred by Sir Michel Fay, Sir Patrick and Lady Hogan.

Jim Gibbs paid $28,000 to buy Respin at the 2016 Select Sale at Karaka, and the filly has now had five starts for two wins, two placings and $38,625 in prize-money.

Saturday’s win was worth 7 Southern Filly Series points, moving Respin into equal second place on the table alongside Kiwi Ida (Squamosa).

Courte Zarindi, who already had 7 points to her name after winning last month’s Listed NZB Airfreight Stakes (1400m) at Wingatui, earned another 2 points to take the outright Series lead with 9.

The fourth and final leg of the Series, the $50,000 Listed New Zealand Bloodstock Warstep Stakes (2000m), will be held at Riccarton on April 21.
