Breeders, trainers and owners alike will flock to NZB's Karaka May Sale on 7 and 8 May to tap into New Zealand’s matriarchal strength that is the impeccable pedigrees of New Zealand-bred mares.

Our breeding barns are well known to international buyers with Kiwi mares playing a major role in elite races across Australasia – in the last five seasons, New Zealand mares have produced more than 270 stakes winners and 39 Group 1 winners in Australia. The upcoming Sale will offer 144 catalogued broodmares in a not-to-be-missed opportunity to add to your broodmare band.

With Cambridge Stud starting a new era following the change of guard from Sir Patrick and Lady Justine Hogan to Brendan and Jo Lindsay, the nursery will auction off 22 of their quality broodmares and the Stravinsky mare Diamond Babe (NZ) (Lot 406) features as a highlight.

A half-sister to Group 3 winner Spring Cheer and stakes performer Transcend, she has produced Australian Group 2 winner and Group 1 Toorak Handicap performer Blackie (NZ) (Black Minnaloushe). Diamond Babe has been served by Cambridge Stud’s Burgundy, sire of the NZB Filly of the Year Dijon Bleu (NZ). A young Pins mare, from the famed Eight Carat family, Passion Cut (NZ) will also come through the Cambridge Stud draft at Lot 468 and has been served by fellow resident Cambridge Stud sire Tavistock.

The stakes-winning Thorn Park mare Magic Briar (NZ) (Lot 447) will be consigned by Trelawney Stud. A five-time winner she comes from a prolific family of black-type fillies and has been served by Shamexpress.

Bradbury Park will offer dual stakes winner Halobelle (NZ) (My Halo) at Lot 419. A half-sister to Group 2 place-getter Benelli, her progeny includes stakes performed Starlight Angel (NZ) (Swiss Ace) who will also be offered at the Sale as Curraghmore’s Lot 496. Halobelle has been served by Waikato Stud’s newcomer Sacred Falls whose first crop of yearlings sold at an average of $123,659 (41 lots sold) in Book 1 at Karaka this year.

Oakwood (NZ) (Spartacus) will be offered on account of The Oaks Stud at Lot 462. Herself a winner on debut and twice placed at black-type level, she has also produced a stakes winner in Cryptic (NZ) (Sakhee’s Secret). She has been served by Roc de Cambes, sire of Group 1 New Zealand Derby winner Vin de Dance (NZ).

Eight-time winner, including two at black-type level, Chaparella (NZ) (High Chaparral) is set to be offered as part of Blandford Lodge’s draft at Lot 396. Her first foal to race is an Iffraaj filly Style by Design (NZ) who has placed in two black-type races. Chaparella has been served by the popular sire Per Incanto.

Other highlight broodmares in the catalogue include:

  • Curraghmore’s Invermoray (NZ) (Volksraad) at Lot 425 is a full sister to Group 1 winner Velocitea (NZ) and has been served by Iffraaj.
  • Group 2 winner Equiparada (Editor’s Note) (Lot 409) served by Rageese in early October and offered on account of Brighthill Farm.
