Passion Cut, catalogued as Lot 468 at the Karaka May Sale, has the renowned Cambridge Stud bloodlines coming from the great Eight Carat family.

While the new owners of Cambridge Stud, Brendan and Jo Lindsay, consigned the broodmare who is in foal to their resident sire Tavistock – it was the Stud’s previous owner, Sir Patrick Hogan, who purchased the broodmare for $150,000.

“I’m pretty passionate about the [Eight Carat] family,” commend Sir Patrick.

“She’s a young mare and we unfortunately lost her colt by Ocean Park, but she has a nice Power filly at foot with Cambridge Stud.

“It’s pretty hard to get nice Pins mares, he’s a successful sire and broodmare sire.

“I’ve had a bit of luck with that family and done well with it, so I’m very happy to be able to buy her back. Depending on whether her foal is a colt, it will likely head back to Karaka at some time.”

Admitting that it’s a bit strange to come to Karaka and buy a Cambridge Stud mare, Sir Patrick continues to play a pivotal role in the breeding industry.

“With partners and my owners, we have about 10 or 12 mares of my own, but of course I have some magnificently bred two and three-year-old fillies racing.

“In a couple of years I will have some smashing fillies by Savabeel, O’Reilly, Tavistock and Redoute’s Choice. They’ll come through into the farm and should prove to be pretty special."
