With a remarkable front-running performance, $16,000 Select Sale graduate Dee And Gee (NZ) (Darci Brahma) collected her first stakes win in Saturday’s $75,000 Listed Redwood Metropolitan Trophy (2500m) at Riccarton.

Trapped wide in the early stages, rider Cameron Lammas elected to send the five-year-old forward to take the lead. Dee And Gee kicked away in the straight, moving well clear of her challengers.

The others were never able to eat into that advantage, and Dee And Gee crossed the finish line three lengths clear.

“I decided to go to the front and make them chase me, and she just kept finding,” Lammas said.

Owned and trained by Timaru couple Terrill Charles and Peter Corbett, Dee And Gee has now had 22 starts for four wins, four placings and $109,485 in prize-money – almost seven times her purchase price.

“She was a handy sort of horse last season who I always thought would get a bit of distance,” Corbett said.
