Passed in with a $60,000 reserve at the 2015 Premier Sale, well-bred mare Flamingo (NZ) (Pins) boosted her value with a black-type win in Wednesday’s $50,000 Listed Property Brokers Wairarapa Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (1600m) at Tauherenikau.

Flamingo is out of the stakes-winning mare Bird (NZ) (Danasinga), who is also the dam of Singapore stakes winner Preditor (NZ) (Savabeel).

Raced by her breeder, Waikato Stud’s Mark Chittick, Flamingo is in foal to Savabeel. She had won five races and almost $100,000 in stakes before Wednesday, but Group Three placings in the Cambridge Breeders’ Stakes (1200m) and Cuddle Stakes (1600m) were her only black type. Wednesday’s win was a timely breakthrough.

Ridden by Rosie Myers, Flamingo sat in fifth place before swooping around the outside at the turn. She hit the front early in the run home, then kicked strongly to hold back the late-finishing Glory Days (NZ) (Red Giant) by three-quarters of a length.

“She’s done such a fabulous job and we’re very grateful to be able to do this for Waikato Stud, who have been great supporters,” Emma Haworth said.

“It’s sad to think she’s going soon, but she’s really grown another leg since she’s been in foal.”

Flamingo has now had 21 starts for six wins, three placings and $130,310 in prize-money.
