Hours before winning Saturday’s Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) in Sydney with Ready to Run Sale graduate Te Akau Shark (NZ) (Rip Van Winkle), the Te Akau Racing team collected another big win with a horse sourced from the same Sale.

Up-and-coming filly Star of Bombay (NZ) (Atlante) was bought by David Ellis for just $50,000 at the 2018 Ready to Run Sale at Karaka.

On Saturday at Ellerslie, she won the Listed $60,000 Mufhasa FastTrack Stakes (1300m) – the third win of her five-start career, and her first at black-type level.

Ridden by Ryan Elliot, Star of Bombay sat in third place before pouncing in the straight and shooting to a clear lead.

Bella Mente (NZ) (El Roca) and Run to Perfection (Sepoy) flew at her with big late challenges, but Star of Bombay held on strongly to win by three-quarters of a length.

Trained by Jamie Richards for the Te Akau Bombay Star Syndicate, the exciting filly has now earned $70,250 in prize-money.

“That was the win of a filly going places,” David Ellis said. “She actually had a bit of a hiccup in the last 10 days and missed a gallop, so it’s a remarkable training performance by Jamie. It’s not easy to go eight weeks between runs and then produce a performance like that at this level.”

Star of Bombay is now being pointed towards the $100,000 Group 2 Wellington Guineas (1400m) at Trentham on March 14.
