The New Zealand Bloodstock Karaka May Sale Weanling session has concluded with a pleasing increase in average and median price from last year’s edition of the Sale.

The average weanling price reached $18,121 (up 35%) and the median rose to $10,000 from $8,000 in 2018, with the aggregate closing at $1,649,000 for 91 lots sold (71% clearance).

The 2019 Karaka May Sale has been boosted by a number of black-type race results since the catalogue went to print.

The catalogue features more than a dozen horses who are closely related to recent Group 1 performers.

Lot 5, an Ocean Park colt on account of Little Avondale Stud, comes from the same family as Bella Martini (Stratum), who was third in the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) in Adelaide earlier this month. Another close relative, Volcanic Ash (Magnus), recently won the Listed Tunku Gold Cup (1200m).

The catalogue for the 2019 Karaka May Sale has been bolstered by three supplementary entries – a weanling and two broodmares to be offered at the end of each session they are catalogued in.

Westbury Stud have added a fifth weanling to their May Sale draft in Lot 241– a filly from the first crop of their Victoria Derby-winning stallion Tarzino. The filly is out of Cabal (NZ) (Carnegie), a half-sister to the multiple Group 1 winner Second Coming (NZ) (Oak Ridge). Cabal is the dam of four winners from five foals to race.

Belardo (Lope de Vega – Danaskaya) – A Champion 2YO who won the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes, Belardo also won the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes as a four-year-old. Shuttling to Haunui Farm, Belardo will be represented by eight weanlings at the Karaka May Sale from his first southern hemisphere crop.

Flying Artie (Artie Schiller – Flying Ruby) – Champion 3YO colt in Australia in 2016-17 and the leading 3YO sprinter in the world in his year, Flying Artie won the stallion-making Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes at Flemington. As a two-year-old, he placed in the Group 1 Golden Slipper and Blue Diamond. The Newgate Farm stallion is the sire of Lot 154 in the Sale.

With the 2019 Karaka May Sale less than two weeks away, an astute broodmare purchase at the 2016 edition of the sale earned a valuable black-type reward at Riccarton on Saturday.

Well-bred mare Rosecroft (NZ) (Montjeu) was bought for just $7,000 by Canterbury owner-breeder Stephanie Rathgen. Rosecroft was in foal to the quality former Haunui Farm shuttle stallion Showcasing (Oasis Dream).
