Strong Competition Throughout NZB Broodmare & Mixed Sessions

Despite good competition on the sought after lots, purchasers at New Zealand Bloodstock's National Weanling, Broodmare and Mixed Bloodstock Sale were treated to some outstanding value over the course of the broodmare and mixed bloodstock sessions that concluded at Karaka today.

Highlighted by a healthy clearance rate of 85%, the broodmare session concluded with a top price of $72,500, paid by Wentwood Grange for the well-bred Danehill mare Entrancement (Lot 636). Offered by Curraghmore Stud, she was purchased with a positive pregnancy to One Cool Cat.

Wentwood Grange principal Des Hawkins commented, "She's a lovely mare and we're very happy to get her at that price. It's going to get harder and harder to get daughters of Sadler's Wells mares so this was a great opportunity. We've no definite plans for her yet but will probably send her to Faltaat in the next couple of years."

A total of 251 broodmares were sold for an average price of $5,456, with a final session median of $2,400 and an aggregate of $1,369,450.

Following the conclusion of the broodmare session were yearlings, two year olds, unraced stock, racehorses and the supplementary entries. The highlight of the mixed session came at Lot 754, a yearling filly by More Than Ready from the unraced Scenic mare Bumps. Offered by the receivers appointed over specific assets of Stoney Bridge Thoroughbreds Ltd, she was purchased by Queensland-based Assured Assets Pty Ltd for $75,000.

Of the total 768 lots catalogued over the course of the past three days, 585 lots were sold, representing a pleasing 86% clearance rate, for an average price of $6,897 (down 45% from 2008) and total receipts of $4,034,950 (down 45% from 2008 for 588 lots sold).

Petrea Vela, New Zealand Bloodstock Managing Director Sales & Marketing said, in spite of figures being down on last year's record results, there were some positives to be taken from this year's sale.

"While the figures are down on last year, there has been plenty of activity in the ring over the last three days and it's been heartening to see the majority of horses find new homes. There were certainly some bargains - particularly from the broodmare session - and hopefully those buyers will be well rewarded in 2011 when the economy has picked up."

The leading vendor of broodmares was Bob Emery's Belvedere Farm who sold 19 mares for $156,350 including Lot 491, Snazzy Lass. Masterton-based Bruce Perry Bloodstock paid $70,000 for the unraced Viscount mare in foal to One Cool Cat.

Blue Sky Thoroughbreds outlaid $95,000 for two broodmares to make them the leading purchaser in the session, highlighted by the $65,000 Lot 527. Ulmer, by Carnegie, is a half-sister to Hips Don't Lie and was sold by Whakanui Stud in foal to One Cool Cat.

Positive Conclusion to NZB Weanling Session

A strong day's trading at Karaka today saw the Weanling Session of New Zealand Bloodstock's National Weanling, Broodmare and Mixed Bloodstock Sale conclude on a positive note.

One of the most pleasing outcomes of the day was the 88% clearance rate, just shy of last year's record for New Zealand Bloodstock of 89%. This was noticeable throughout the day with spirited bidding at all levels of the weanling market.

 Lot-207

Weanling Session sale topper - Lot 207 - a Darci Brahma colt sold on account of Esker Lodge.

The highlight of the day came when Lot 207 - having passed in yesterday for $80,000 - was sold subsequently for $100,000 making it the highest priced weanling of the sale. The colt, by first season sire Darci Brahma, is a half-brother to dual Group 1 winner Hail and was purchased by Tony and Claire Anderson's Papakura-based Ballydoyle from Tom and Shelley Murtagh's Esker Lodge.

Clare Anderson was thrilled with her purchase, which has been pinhooked for the 2010 National Yearling Sales Series. "He's a lovely colt with a great attitude already. We were also attracted to his pedigree and expect that Darci Brahma's progeny are going to be popular come yearling sales in January."

The average tracked up throughout the day to finish at $9,018, down 34% from last year's record weanling average of $13,733. Turnover for the session reached $2,407,800 while the median rounded off at $3,250.

The session provided a great start to the sales careers of the first season sires with Darci Brahma recording the highest sire average at $41,813 while progeny by Perfectly Ready and Fast n Famous were also highly sought after.

For the fourth year running Gordon Cunningham's Curraghmore Stud emerged the leading vendor of the weanling session, selling 15 youngsters for total receipts of $352,000 and an average price of $23,467.

Paul and Cushla Smithies Monovale Holdings edged in to be the leading vendor by average with a figure of $40,563 from the sale of four weanlings. Their top lot fetched second highest price of the session with $82,500 paid for Lot 312. From a three-quarter sister to Group 1 NZ Derby winner Hades - Helene Vitality (HK) (Zabeel) and fellow successful Hong Kong galloper Everbright, she is by Coolmore Stud's dual Group 1 winning son of Danehill, Holy Roman Emperor. New Zealand Bloodstock agent, John Cameron acted on behalf of clients to secure the filly and commented, "She's a strongly made, athletic filly who is built in the same mould as her promising young sire."

Meanwhile the leading purchaser of weanlings was Cambridge-based Michael Wallace Bloodstock who bought six for a total outlay of $134,500.

"I had orders for four different New Zealand-based clients with five of the six lots looking like possible pinhooks. It was encouraging to see the Sale hold up so well and have such tough competition on the quality lots."

National Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale

With the weanling order concluding at lot 336, a portion of the broodmare offering went under the hammer this afternoon with Dormello Stud's Lot 366 providing the price highlight so far. The Sadler's Wells mare Incommunicado, carrying a positive pregnancy test to Savabeel, sold to the bid of South Island buyers Ballybin Farm for $60,000.

Tomorrow will see the remaining 173 broodmares plus 18 yearlings, 21 two-year-olds, nine unraced stock and 17 racehorses go under the hammer from 10am. The supplementary catalogue, without the weanlings, will follow on at the conclusion of the main catalogue.

First Season Sires Shine at Karaka

It was the first season sires that stole the show on a brisk autumn day at Karaka, with weanlings by Perfectly Ready, Fast n Famous and Darci Brahma in high demand on day one of New Zealand Bloodstock's three-day National Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale.

 Lot-242

 Today's highest priced weanling
Lot 242 by Perfectly Ready

The top price of the day came from Brighthill Farm's young sire Perfectly Ready. Clearly stamping his progeny, youngsters by the multiple stakes winning son of More Than Ready were highly sought after with 12 selling to record an average of $22,188. His top price was fetched by the last lot of the day - Lot 242 - with Bill Gleeson's Wellfield Lodge securing the bay colt for $56,000.

Heading the freshman bunch by average was The Oaks Stud's sire, Darci Brahma, the five-time Group 1 winning son of Danehill. His three youngsters sold today for an average of $22,417, his top lot being a $40,000 bay filly from the Fairy King mare, Anakela Bay at Lot 233.

Also making a big impression on his sale-day debut was Waikato Stud's newest addition to its top performing stallion ranks, Fast n Famous. The dual stakes winning son of Redoute's Choice accounted for Lot 66 from the Montjeu mare, Libourne. Selling for $52,000, he joined Lot 233 as purchases knocked down to New Zealand Bloodstock as agent.

Selling all three afore mentioned youngsters was Gordon Cunningham's Curraghmore Stud, making the Hamilton-based operation the leading vendor of the day. This well-prepared draft fetched an aggregate of $256,000 and averaged $23,273 for their 11 sold lots. Tomorrow a further six weanlings will be offered by the Stud.

The leading buyer of the day, with two youngsters for an $87,000 outlay, was Australian-trainer John Morrisey. His most expensive purchase was Lot 180, a brown colt by Pentire. Sold by Esker Lodge, he is from the Dance Floor mare Stretto and contributed to his sire Pentire currently holding the highest  average of the day at $35,000 for three weanlings sold.

Of the 242 weanlings catalogued for sale today, 183 were sold for an aggregate of $1,539,600, representing a current average of $8,413 and a strong clearance rate of 84%.

New Zealand Bloodstock Managing Director Sales & Marketing, Petrea Vela, said today's results reflect the steady demand witnessed for weanlings throughout the day.

"The sale average is currently tracking about 35% down on last year's record figures which is about in line with expectations in the current climate. The clearance rate is holding up very well which is pleasing and there has definitely been a sense of buoyancy to the market, with solid trade throughout the day. Hopefully that momentum will continue through to the end of the weanlings tomorrow and into the broodmare session."

The remaining 94 weanlings are set to go under the hammer from 10am tomorrow (starting from lot 243) followed by the four supplementary entries. Click here to view the catalogue.

Successful Broodmare Sires Take Centre Stage at Karaka

New Zealand Bloodstock's National Weanling, Broodmare, and Mixed Bloodstock Sale at Karaka on May 4, 5, and 6 is set to offer an abundance of broodmare opportunities, 323 in total,  by sires who have proven themselves on the racetrack to be outstanding dam-sires.

 centaine-and-Mark

 Centaine (AUS)

Leading both the New Zealand and Australian Broodmare Sire List's this season is the infallible Centaine (Century). The ill-fated Waikato Stud-based sire can lay claim to three Group 1 winners this season including Group 1 Doncaster Handicap winner Vision and Power (Carnegie), Group 1 Toorak Handicap winner Alamosa (O'Reilly), and dual Group 1 winner MacO'Reilly (O'Reilly).

The sire of 61 stakes winners, Centaine's daughters have already left 77 stakes winners including 17 Group 1 winners. He has been crowned New Zealand's leading broodmare sire over the past three years, while in Australia he has not finished out of the top ten over the past five years and is on course to land the title for the first time this season.

Centaine is represented by eight daughters at Karaka in May including:

Lot 371 - Irish Eyes 1999 (Centaine - Cinzano, by Lord Ballina) - Belvedere Farm

·         Her sire and dam sires read Centaine - Lord Ballina - Sound Reason, and she is a direct descendent of Bourbon Lass, as is this season's Group 1 VRC Oaks place getter Miss Scarlatti (Stravinsky).

·         She is sold in-foal to exciting young Cambridge sire Lucky Unicorn. LSD 22-11-2008.

Lot 455 - Porshe 1996 (Centaine - Victoria Tan, by Vice Regal) - Waikato Stud

·         Porshe has already left two smart gallopers in Tear 'n' Triumph (O'Reilly), the winner of seven and placed in the Listed Kilmore Cup, and Boxapins (Pins) a winner of two.

·         Hailing from Mary Poppins, Porshe is sold with an early service to Group 1 Cox Plate winner Savabeel. LSD 3-10-2008.

Lot 653 - Flying Florence 2001 (Centaine - Falcons Fire, by Kaapstad) - Dormello Stud

·         A winner at two, Flying Florence is the dam of Richard Collett's exciting 2YO Poetic Music (Stravinsky), a winner of the $100,000 Carnival Bonus at her first start this season.

·         This young mare is sold with an early positive test to Dormello's Group 2 winning son of Redoute's Choice in Duelled.

 Danehill

 Danehill (USA)

Like Centaine in New Zealand, internationally successful Danehill (Danzig) has dominated the Australian Broodmare Sire Premiership over the past three years. This season he currently sits just A$30,000 off Centaine's total prize-money with his leading money earner and sole Group 1 winner being Tuesday Joy (Danehill).

Danehill has amassed 102 stakes winners as a broodmare sire, 21 of these at the elite Group 1 level including this season's Group 1 New Zealand Bloodstock Thoroughbred Breeder's Stakes winner Dane Julia (Caesour).

Five Danehill mares will be presented for sale at the National Weanling, Broodmare and Mixed Bloodstock Sale. These include:

Lot 494 - Star 1993 (Danehill - Desirable, by Without Fear) - Trelawney Stud
