Karaka 2010: A Week of Success

A staggering sale week at Karaka last week saw pre-sale expectations thoroughly surpassed, from vendors to buyers to casual observers seeing no signs of recession dampening spirited trade at New Zealand Bloodstock's annual yearling showcase.

At each level of the seven-day Sale - the Premier, Select and Festival sessions - there were significant increases on last year's figures, combining to post a dramatic turnaround in the results after last year's downturn.

In total, 1621 yearlings were catalogued for the 2010 Sales Series, 89 lots less than last year. In the final breakdown, turnover for the sale increased almost $20 million to $93,567,400, 25% up on the 2009 figure with 70 fewer horses sold.

The combined sale average increased 33% to finish at $82,876, the second highest in NZB history. A healthy $12,000 (40%) increase in median to $42,000 also signalled the strength and depth witnessed in the middle market.

Amongst its highlights, the Sale saw the first million-dollar lots of the Australasian yearling sales season. With NZB still holding the Australasian record of $3.6 million for a yearling sold at auction in the southern hemisphere, the top price of $2 million this year (Lot 373) became the third-equal highest yearling to ever go through the Karaka ring.

Two other yearlings hit the magical the million dollar mark (Lots 102 & 431), just one less than the record four sold in 2007.

New Zealand Bloodstock Co-Managing Director Petrea Vela summed up the sale company's take on the week.

"It has been a phenomenal week in the world of New Zealand thoroughbreds. We've had so many buyers and vendors tell us that this was the strongest sale they've ever been to in New Zealand.

"Many of the factors that contributed to our records in 2008 weren't present this year, instead we were coming off a recession and there were still a question mark over the extent to which our industry had recovered. But it would seem that the combination of the consistent success by NZ horses, the great crop of yearlings presented, and the NZ dollar have made NZ as attractive a market as it has ever been.

"The magic ingredient this week was no doubt the force of the Australian buyers. NZ middle-distance and staying horses are making such an impression there that there was overwhelming demand for those types of horses. We are very fortunate as an industry to have a market with that sort of firepower right on our doorstep, and hope this week's investment pays dividends for that support."

Buyers

The powerful international buying bench assembled at Karaka was this year headed by Hamilton-based trainer, Graeme Rogerson, buying predominantly for prominent Melbourne owner, Lloyd Williams. Returning for the first time to the top of the leading buyers list since 2005, Rogerson Bloodstock secured 28 yearlings for an aggregate of $5,018,000.

His highest-priced purchase was $500,000 for Lot 15, the Encosta de Lago colt from the Zabeel mare, Liberty Walk.

With New Zealanders securing 61% of the horses sold (683 lots) the total New Zealand spend was a fraction ahead of last year, at $36 million, versus $35 million for 784 horses in 2009.

Always prominent at Karaka, it was Te Akau Racing who lead the New Zealand charge and ended up second on the buyers list. David Ellis and Mark Walker's stable boosted its numbers with 29 youngsters, including one of the three million-dollar lots.

Ellis bid to $1.3 million to secure Pencarrow Stud's Redoute's Choice colt at Lot 431, a three-quarter brother to their former stable star, Darci Brahma.

Amongst the other prominent New Zealanders were bloodstock agents Paul Moroney and Bruce Perry, and Cambridge trainer Roger James.

The Australian buying bench put in a powerful showing, eventually securing 26% of the catalogue - 321 for $46,674,500 - 48% of the sale aggregate.

With well-documented success with a string of kiwi thoroughbreds including the likes of Master O'Reilly, Vigor, Keano and Ballack, Melbourne-based trainer Danny O'Brien headed the Australian onslaught spending $2.6 million on 15 horses.

The buyers sheet reads as a who's who of top Australian trainers featuring the likes of Bart Cummings, Gai Waterhouse, Mark Kavanagh, Peter Moody, John Hawkes and Mick Price, all spending in excess of $1 million.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club was again active at Karaka, securing six lots for their International Sale in November. In total 66 horses were purchased for Hong Kong, at a spend of $8,212,500, with bloodstock agents Justin Bahen, Apollo Ng and Willie Leung also active throughout the sessions. A relative newcomer to Karaka, Bahen purchased 16 yearlings for $986,000.

The Singapore spend at Karaka continues to grow exponentially, leaping from around $1 million each year up until 2007, to over $4.5 million on 45 horses this year.

This includes the first million dollar yearling to go from Karaka to Singapore when Jayven See purchased Esker Lodge's $1 million Fastnet Rock colt from Popsy at Lot 102. Prior to this year, the top price paid for a Singapore-bound yearling from Karaka was $240,000.

Other countries active at Karaka were Japan, Malaysia, Ireland, and the United Kingdom.

Sires

Seven entries by Redoute's Choice - ranging in price from $1.4 million to $180,000 - contributed to the sire's hold as the leading sire by average at $454,286.

A pleasing outcome for the kiwis from sales week was the hot demand for their local sires, underpinned by champion Zabeel. With an average of $315,000 for 41 lots sold, Zabeel's crop generated total receipts of $12,945,000, 14% of the sale's turnover.

Other prominent local sires were Waikato Stud's O'Reilly and Rich Hill Stud's Pentire both selling up to $600,000. Pentire's Lot 267 went to Japan buyer Hajime Kaneko while Waikato Stud purchased Phoenix Park's O'Reilly filly at Lot 189.

Fellow Waikato Stud sire Pins also reached lofty heights with Gai Waterhouse bidding to $650,000 to secure Lot 111, a half-sister to Group 2 STC Reisling Stakes winner Hips Don't Lie (Stravinsky).

The fairytale of Darci Brahma came full-circle at Karaka in 2010 with his first crop of yearlings highly sought after. He headed the first season sire table with an average of $118,439. His top price was $480,000 for the colt from Fairy Lights bought by Dean Hawthorne from The Oaks Stud.

Bred and sold by Peter and Philip Vela's Pencarrow Stud, the winner of five Group 1 races sold at Karaka just six years ago for $1.1 million. Now standing at The Oaks Stud, his youngsters are now bound for stables in NZ, Australia, Singapore, Ireland and Hong Kong.

Vendors

Selling exclusively at Karaka, Sir Patrick and Justine Lady Hogan's Cambridge Stud emerged the leading vendor for the 28th year in a row and topped the sale with Lot 373. The bay colt by the perennial champion Zabeel from Diamond Like provided the stud with their 11th million dollar lot. He is also the fifth yearling from the Eight Carat family to break the million at Karaka.

Gordon Cunningham's Curraghmore Stud followed Cambridge with 41 lots selling for $7,355,000, including three $500,000 Encosta de Lago yearlings. Two of them being colts bound for Hong Kong, and a filly purchased by Hawkes Racing.

For the second year in a row, Pencarrow Stud's choice draft of yearlings, including their $1.3 million three-quarter brother to Darci Brahma, assured their place as the leading vendors by average at $276,333 for 15 sold.

Bob Emery's Belvedere Farm claimed second-highest honours, with five sold for an average of $198,000, including Lot $425,000 for Lot 441.

Bill Gleeson's Palmerston North operation, Wellfield Lodge, also did well, selling 11 lots for $195,909. Other prominent vendors with smaller offerings included Wayne and Vicki Pike's Longlands Stud and Tim Bodle's Whakanui Stud.

All 2010 National Yearling Sales Series purchases are eligible to enter for the Karaka Million Series which includes the Karaka Million for 2YOs in 2011 as well as the Karaka 3YO Mile in 2012. Click here for more information including conditions of entry and entry form.

Select Sale Closes a Stellar Week at Karaka

The stellar week of selling at Karaka continued right to the end of New Zealand Bloodstock's three-day Select Sale today, with a host of new highlights recorded for this session.

The appeal of Karaka's burgeoning Select Sale - the source of nine individual Group 1 winners last year - was evident as final figures sailed past last year's results. In the final analysis, 438 yearlings were sold for $22,927,500, a massive 35% increase in turnover compared with $17,039,000 for 456 sold last year.

This brings the combined aggregate at this point in the Sales Series to $88,301,000, the second highest aggregate ever recorded at Karaka, with two days of selling still to go.

The most impressive increase was the final sale average, up 40% from $37,366 to $52,346. As with turnover, this is also in excess of the 2009 and 2007 result.

The sale median held steady today at $40,000, up 33% on $30,000 last year.

The final clearance rate settled at 78%, a healthy increase on last year's 74%. To add to that, the Premier Sale clearance rate has edged up to 80% since selling finished on Tuesday evening.

Demonstrating the increased strength at the top of the market, seven yearlings sold for $200,000 or more, compared with just one last year, and 21 yearlings sold for $150,000 or more compared with just five last year (and 26 at 2008's record sale).

The top price of the Select Sale came early today when $250,000 was paid for Lot 947, the Elusive City colt from Generous mare, Bella Mimosa bought by O'Brien Thoroughbreds. Offered by Haunui Farm it is one of 15 yearlings bought by Melbourne trainer, Danny O'Brien, over the last five days at Karaka.

The leading buyer of the Select Sale is prominent New Zealand buyer, David Ellis, with 14 yearlings bought for $792,500.  Ellis's total purchases for the week are 28 lots for $4,167,500

With the top price on Day Two, leading the sires averages was Elusive Quality with four sold for an average of $122,500.

Next on the list was Waikato Stud sire, O'Reilly, with 30 of his 37 entries sold for an average of $87,100. O'Reilly's top price was also $200,000, paid for the colt at Lot 1025 from Westbury Stud by New Zealand Bloodstock as agent.

The leading Select Sale vendor by average is Mark & Denny Baker's Hallmark Stud, with nine of their ten entries sold for an average of $110,667. Hallmark's top price was $170,000 paid for the Pentire colt at Lot 692.

NZB Co-Managing Director Petrea Vela said the impetus from Karaka's spectacular Premier session has flowed through to the past three days.

"When we were selecting for the sale this year we saw a host of yearlings that in years past might have been in Premier now featuring in the Select session so we knew the strength was there. But it has been great to see the buyers still hard at battle for the lots they want.

"The Select Sale is growing year by year in its own right and the results are speaking for themselves. More and more buyers are staying on for this session and the results are reflecting this growing competition.

"We're very happy to see the support the sale has received this week and wish buyers the very best of luck with their purchases. We hope that some of the momentum from this incredible week can flow into our Festival session on Sunday and Monday."

Click here to see any passed lots from the Premier or Select sessions at Karaka. The two-day Festival sale will commence at 11am on Sunday 7th February at Lot 1102.

Momentum Continues at Karaka Select

The momentum continued on Day Two of New Zealand Bloodstock's three-day Select session today at Karaka, with the highlight of the day's trade coming late in proceedings with the $200,000 Elusive Quality colt at Lot 879.

Offered by Haunui Farm, the current leading vendors by aggregate, the colt from the Bluebird mare Blue Quail was knocked down to the bid of local bloodstock agent, Phil Cataldo, for his Melbourne-based client.

"He's got a magnificent physique, a great front on him and a deep girth - I rated him as the best colt in the sale," Phil commented.

"I've also had a bit of luck with the family, purchasing My Royal Captain who won his first three races in a row before winning Singapore's Group 1 Patron's Bowl. This colt reminded me of My Royal Captain and I've loved him since we saw him at Haunui just over a month ago.

"He's a quality colt and quite mature so he's been entered for the Karaka Million."

The second top price was just the second lot of the day, at Lot 692. Following the strong demand for the sire's progeny seen earlier in the week, the colt by Pentire fetched $170,000 to the bid of New South Wales buyer, Edward Murray. Offered by Denny & Mark Baker's Hallmark Stud, the colt is from the winning Danehill mare Sheza Gem.

After 417 of the 618 catalogued lots, the current average of $52,061 is tracking a massive 39% ahead of last year's final Select Sale average of $37,366, with the median following suit, 33% ahead of last year's $30,000 at $40,000.  The clearance rate has strengthened further to finish the day on 79%.

Turnover so far for the Select Sale is $15,878,500 for 305 lots sold, and is set to fly past last year's final turnover of $17,039,000 for 456 lots sold.

Most active on the buyers bench today was Rogerson Bloodstock with 5 more yearlings to add to his haul of 21 so far for the week. Rogerson's top price of the day was $115,000 paid for the O'Reilly colt at Lot 826 from Kinjite mare, Activate.

Next on the buyers list is Australia's BC3 Thoroughbreds with two Select Sale purchases today to bring their total to four at Select and three from Premier. Queensland agent John Foote's $145,000 purchase late in the piece at Lot 897 saw him equal BC3, both spending $500,000 on their respective purchases at Select.

So far featuring most prominent on the sires list with the highest average, at $119,167 for three horses sold is Windsor Park Stud sire Golan. His top price at this session is  $160,000 for Lot 665 from Henley Park with Hong Kong agent Dan O'Donnell the purchaser.

The third day of the three-day Select Sale will commence at 11am tomorrow from Lot 901, and will be streamed live online. The two-day Festival Sale will follow on Sunday and Monday (7 & 8 February).

Only son of Montjeu at Karaka

After Montjeu Karaka graduates quinellaed the Group 1 Thorndon Mile (1600m) yesterday at Trentham there was an extremely happy vendor on the complex yesterday who boasts the only yearling son of Montjeu at southern hemisphere auction sales in 2010.

Wall Street (Montjeu x Villa Wanda, by Grand Lodge) made it six wins from his last seven starts when he trounced a quality field of 17 runners to give his champion international sire Montjeu his third individual Group 1 winner this season in Australasia following Speed Gifted's AJC Metropolitan and Tavistock's Mudgway Stakes.

Sold by Jo Wilding's Te Mania Thoroughbreds, Wall Street fetched $100,000 at the Karaka Premier Sales to the bid of Paul Moroney Bloodstock on behalf of the GG Syndicate.

With nineteen Group 1 winners it is interesting to note Montjeu's superior colt success. Worldwide, 17 of his 19 Group 1 winners are colts and in Australasia his colts have averaged $104,000 in prize-money while his fillies have averaged $14,000 (figures courtesy of Arion).

 Montjeu colt

Lot 301, the only yearling colt by Montjeu set for auction in 2010

Esker Lodge will offer the only Montjeu yearling colt in the southern hemisphere at the 2010 Karaka Premier Sale at Lot 301.

Bred on the same cross as Wall Street, both are out of Danzig line mares, Lot 301 is a strapping rich bay  whose pedigree combines the very best stallion power being out of Danehill mare. The 26 August foal has a truly international pedigree which includes top fillies Cerulean Sky, Moonstone, and L'Ancresse, along with successful Group 2 winning and Group 1 placed Montjeu stallion Honolulu.

Though the services of Montjeu are not available to southern hemisphere breeders any longer the leading sire is represented by two sons at stud in New Zealand, Gallant Guru at White Robe Lodge and Guillotine at Windsor Park Stud.

Gallant Guru, winner of the Group 2 Sandown Classic, is represented by his first crop of yearlings at Karaka 2010, including two in the Select Sale.

These include Lot 690, a brown half-brother to Group 3 Higgins and Listed Anniversary Handicap fourth Sharp Princess, Lot 724, and a half-brother to leading South Island sprinter Cherry Creek, winner of the Listed Canterbury Belle Stakes.

Lot 690, a colt from the first crop of Gallant Guru

Wall Street provided New Zealand Bloodstock with Group 1 winner number 12 for the season, again the current leading southern hemisphere auction house.

Karaka graduates also took out the Group 2 Wellington Cup yesterday when Red Ruler (Viking Ruler) continued his wonderful form for his trainer John Sargent who picked him out as a yearling for $60,000 from Trelawney Stud.

Viking Ruler will be represented by 20 progeny at Karaka including five at Premier.

The dates for the 84th National Yearling Sales Series are as follows:

· Premier Sale: 1 & 2 February
· Select Sale: 3 - 5 February
· Festival Sale: 7 & 8 February

Plenty of Pedigree Updates for Karaka 2010

Since the catalogues for the 2010 New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale Series (1-8 February) head to the printers in mid-November, it is inevitable that many of the 1621 yearlings selling at Karaka have significant pedigree updates.

 General Nediym x Gemstone colt - lot 418 (7)

Lot 418, a General Nediym colt out of a half-sister to Fairygem

The latest of these came on Tuesday when Fairygem (NZ) (Viscount x Gemscay, by Maizcay) showed kiwi dominance at a middle distance when running away with the Listed Australia Day Cup in Sydney. Her first black-type win bolstered the pedigree of Lot 418, a General Nediym colt from a half-sister to Fairy Gem in the Rich Hill Stud draft.

The biggest update to date came last weekend in the Group 1 Telegraph Handicap (1200m) on Saturday when Vonusti (Ustinov) ran away with the thick end of the $1,000,0000 prize, a perfectly timed performance for his full brother, Lot 644,  from the Brighthill draft.

The other Group 1 update came for Lot 791, a Perfectly Ready half-sister to Levin Classic winner Eileen Dubh (Storm Creek), a filly promising residual value being from the Soliloquy family.

Star New Zealand two-year-old Cellarmaster (Dubawi), winner of the Group 3 Eclipse Stakes, has a half-sister by Keeper at Lot 587, while Group 2 Avondale Cup winner Ginga Dude (Istidaad) has a half-sister by Mr Nancho in the Select Sale at Lot 914.

Significantly, Solid Billing took out the Group 3 Summer Cup and Galileo's Galaxy has won two in South Africa and been Group 1 Cape Guineas placed for their half-sister by O'Reilly (Lot 189).

Other post-print stakes winners also include Group 3 Eagle Technology Stakes victor Run Like Al (half-brother by King's Chapel - Lot 577) and Brisbane's Listed Mode Stakes winner Swiss Rose (half-brother by Falkirk - Lot 992).

This weekend's racing could see further pedigree updates prior to the commencement of the Sales, in particular half-siblings to runners facing the starter in the $1,000,000 Karaka Million. These include half-siblings to Big River (half-brother by O'Reilly - Lot 256), Miss Marauder (Elusive City half-sister - Lot 1608), and Irish Jewel (Storm Creek half-brother - Lot 1139).

Click here for the full list of pedigree updates for the Karaka Premier, Select, and Festival sessions.

New Zealand Bloodstock's National Yearling Sales Series (1-8 February) begins at 11am on Monday, 1 February.

A full brother to scintillating Group 1 The Oaks Stud Telegraph Handicap (1200m) winner Vonusti will be offered by Brighthill Farm at the 2010 Karaka Select Sale.

 Lot 644 full vonusti

Lot 644 - the full brother to Vonusti set to sell at Karaka 2010

Vonusti (Ustinov x Reasonably, by Sound Reason) won the $1,000,000 Telegraph with a barn-storming run down the outside of Trentham's champagne turf to beat a red-hot field which included Group 1 Australian raider A Gold Trail (Hussonet), reigning NZ Horse of the Year Mufhasa (Pentire), Group 1 winner Tavistock (Montjeu), Group 1 placed Veloz (Black Minaloushe) and Richard Beymer (Volksraad), Group winners Wall Street (Montjeu), Ruud Van Slaats (Van Nistelrooy), and Coup Align (Align), and Listed winners Wealth Princess (San Luis), Tootsie (Pins), Stupendous (Pentire), and Keano (Pins).

Tim and Margaret Carter train Vonusti after he was offered through the Karaka sales ring twice, once as a yearling, and again through the 2006 NZB Ready to Run Sale. He is one of eleven Group 1 winners offered through the Karaka sale ring already this season.

Owned by Tom and Philip O'Shea, and Ramesh Patel, Vonusti has over $730,000 in prize-money in the bank after eight wins from just 18 starts.

At Lot 644, the bay brother of Vonusti is a half-brother to four winners and is a member of the successful Bourbon Lassie family which has left the likes of Group 1 VRC Derby winner Omnicorp, and recent Group 1 place-getters Miss Scarlatti (Stravinsky), Splashing Out (O'Reilly), Ticklish (Maroof), and Woburn (Groom Dancer).

One of eight Ustinovs catalogued at Karaka, the striking bay (click here for video) should attract plenty of admirers with another close relative, Volkarrie (Volksraad), also updating the pedigree with two further wins since the catalogue has been to print.

 Reset Harriet Filly

Lot 442, a Reset filly closely related to Vonusti

There are a number of Vonusti's close relatives also set to sell at Karaka 2010. At Lot 442 is a filly by Reset whose dam is a half-sister to Vonusti's dam. To be offered by Lyndhurst Farm the filly is a half-sister to Group winner Woburn who was good enough to place in both the Group 1 NZ Derby and Group 1 South Australian Derby.

In the Select Sale three colts closely related to Vonusti will be offered. Fairdale Stud will offer a Howbaddouwantit colt from a half-sister to Vonusti's dam at Lot 1087, a half-brother to stakes-winners Dabeer Zaheer and Mynzawine.

Just a week out from New Zealand Bloodstock's National Yearling Sale Series (1-8 February) the dominance of New Zealand-breds sold through Karaka was again on show in Hong Kong with the fearless Beauty Flash providing a real highlight when running his rivals ragged in the Group 1 Hong Kong Champions Mile (1600m).

Beauty Flash Adds Group 1 for Karaka

Just a week out from New Zealand Bloodstock's National Yearling Sale Series (1-8 February) the dominance of New Zealand-breds sold through Karaka was again on show in Hong Kong with the fearless Beauty Flash providing a real highlight when running his rivals ragged in the Group 1 Hong Kong Champions Mile (1600m).

 Beauty Flash 2

Beauty Flash (Golan) proves to good in the Group 1 Hong Kong Champions Mile

Graduates of Karaka won six races on the ten-race Sha Tin card last night including Beauty Flash (Golan x Wychwood Rose, by Volksraad) whose victory installed him as the current Group 1 Mercedes Hong Kong Derby favourite.

The Group 1 Champions Mile drew a field of 14 outstanding prospects for the future, and it was rightfully Beauty Flash who lead the betting after six wins from his past seven starts, his first coming at Te Rapa (New Zealand) on 31 January 2009.

Christophe Soumillon was engaged to ride the Tony Cruz trained galloper from the widest barrier 14, and the talented Frenchman rode his charge like the best in the race when crossing from the wide alley to lead from the get go.

The flashy chestnut son of Golan maintained a solid gallop throughout and when he kicked 300m from the winning post it was clear none of his competition could match him over the mile.

His winning time of 1.34.39 saw him draw away to win by close to three lengths over Chater Way (Oasis Dream) and fellow Karaka-graduate, Tuscan Spirit (Chianti).

Beauty Flash was one of five yearlings purchased at Karaka 2007 by Hong Kong based bloodstock agent Dan O'Donnell for Hong Kong owner Simon Kwok.

Offered by Windsor Park Stud's Halidon Hill, Beauty Flash at $65,000 was O'Donnell's cheapest purchase and he has now earned over HK$8,500,000 (NZ$1,535,000) with seven wins in his 10 career starts.

Beauty Flash provided his Group 1 winning sire Golan with his 10th stakes winner and second Group 1 winner after Group 1 VRC Derby winner, Kibbutz.

Interestingly, from seven Southern Hemisphere stakes winners Golan has left three of his best performers out of mares by seven times New Zealand Champion sire Volksraad. Beauty Flash is included in this group as is Group 2 Great Northern Guineas winner Le Baron and Listed Grafton Cup winner Castle Heights.

 golan

Golan will be represented by 23 yearlings at Karaka 2010

Golan is represented by 23 yearlings at Karaka 2010 (Premier, Select, and Festival) with the successful New Zealand Sale Series taking place in just under a week.

His five lots in the Premier Sale will all be offered through the Windsor Park Stud draft and include a half-sister to this season's Group 1 VRC Derby and Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes winner Monaco Consul (Lot 274), a full sister to Group 1 VRC Derby winner Kibbutz (Lot 52), a half-sister to last season's Group 1 placed juvenile Corsage (Lot 185), a half-sister to Listed STC Premier's Cup winner Emperor Bonaparte (Lot 391), and a half-brother to Listed Wairarapa Breeders' Stakes winner Pams Pompallier (Lot 473).

Windsor Park Stud will also offer a close relation to Beauty Flash at Lot 806, a colt by Falkirk. The chestnut colt, a half-brother to the dam of Beauty Flash, is out of five time winning and stakes-placed mare Wychwood Lass.

The further five races won in Hong Kong by kiwi-breds were all sired by successful New Zealand based sires who will all be represented at Karaka 2010 including Pins, Faltaat, Ishiguru, Viking Ruler, and Elusive City.

Most impressive of the lot would have to have been another Group 1 Mercedes Hong Kong Derby aspirant in Brave Kid (Elusive City x Gordon's, by Kaapstad) for trainer John Size.

Now the winner of four from four in Hong Kong, the four-year-old took out the Class 2 Baker Handicap over 1400m in the hands of Douglas Whyte who is keen to stick with the son of Elusive City right through until the Derby.

Elusive City is represented by a draft of 37 yearlings at Karaka 2010 (Select, Festival) including three in the Premier session. These include a half-brother to Group 1 Cox Plate winner So You Think (Lot 221), a half-brother to Group 3 winner Millbank (Lot 241), and a colt from a full-sister to Group 2 NZ Cup winner Pentathon (Lot 155).

Half-brother to Demanding Miss at Karaka

Half-brother to Demanding Miss at Karaka

A Mossman half-brother to yesterday's fast finishing BMW Magic Millions Classic (1200m) place-getter Demanding Miss will highlight the draft of Matamata-based JK Farm at the Karaka 2010 Select Sale.

Barry Baldwin's Demanding Miss (Commands x Agony, by Royal Academy) flew from the clouds yesterday in the $2,000,000 feature to nab third behind runaway leader and victor Military Rose (General Nediym).

 Mossman

Mossman, the sire of Karaka Million bound Hoofit and a yearling half-brother to Demanding Miss set to sell at Karaka 2010

Demanding Miss is the first foal of three time winning Royal Academy mare Agony, herself a half-sister to Angst (Kala Dancer) who, along with Samantha Miss, are the only two fillies in history to take out all four legs of Sydney's Princess Series - the Group 1 AJC Flight Stakes, Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes, Group 2 Furious Stakes, and the Group 3 Silver Shadow - before unfortunately passing the same year under anaesthesia.

The second foal of Agony is strapping bay colt by Mossman who, like is older sister, should be ideal for two-year-old racing and, as a Karaka graduate, the $1,000,000 2011 Karaka Million.

JK Farm's John Hogan confirms the colt is a standout.

"He is a great cut of a colt who just keeps improving for us. He has got the size, the scope, and the masculinity, plus he has got the athleticism and attitude to go with it. He is one of the real highlights in our draft."

Catalogued at Lot 830 the bay colt is set to sell just after 3pm at Karaka on Thursday the 4th of February.

In the JK Farm Select draft Hogan also earmarks Lot 972, a colt by Snippetson, as a highlight.

"He is smashing colt who will get up and run for somebody", Hogan commented.

"He has got plenty of power behind the saddle and has all the right proportions".

The chestnut Snippetson colt is out of an End Sweep mare who in turn is out of a Sadler's Wells half-sister to four-time European Group 1 winner Bigstone (Last Tycoon).

The dates for the 84th Karaka National Yearling Sales Series are as follows:

· Premier Sale: 1 & 2 February

Karaka Select and Festival Sales Now Online

The 2010 catalogues for both the Karaka Select and Festival Sales are now available online.

Following on from the Premier Sale (1 & 2 February) the Select Sale (3, 4, & 5 February), and the Festival Sale (7 & 8 February), combine to form the 2010 New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sales Series at Karaka.

The Select Sale has 618 yearlings catalogued in 2010 (down from 640 in 2009), while the Festival Sale numbers are almost identical to 2009 with 520 lots (525 in 2009).

Both Sales have contributed strongly to the 55 Group 1 winners the Series has produced over the past three seasons, the most of any yearling series in Australasia, with this season bearing more fruit with headline act Monaco Consul (High Chaparral), a 2007 Select Sale graduate, unbeaten in Australia with victories in both the Group 1 Victoria Derby and Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes.

New Zealand's Horse of the Year Mufhasa (Pentire) was also purchased at Select, along with The Heckler, Kaaptan, Maco'Reilly, Prince Kaapstad, Court Ruler, and Orange County who all won at the elite level last season, and this season Vosne Romanee and Tavistock provided the three-day Sale with two of three legs of the Hawke's Bay Triple Crown.

The Festival Sale has chimed in at the top level also with Altered Image grabbing last season's Group 1 Levin Classic in course record time, while Gallions Reach won the Group 1 Zabeel Classic before jetting off to compete in the 2009 Melbourne Cup, and in the same colours, Seven Schillings only just got run down in the Group 1 Diamond Stakes.

Up and coming Hong Kong sprinter Tuscan Spirit was also a 'green book' purchase, as was 2009 Group 1 Kelt Capital Stakes placed Ginga Dude.

Select and Festival Sessions Overview:

  • 73 half or full siblings to stakes-winners
  • 66 out of stakes-winners

In the flow on effect from the highest quality Premier Sale catalogue New Zealand Bloodstock has put together (over 50% of yearlings either half to, or out of, stakes winners), the 2010 Select and Festival Sales will offer plenty in terms of pedigree page, as well as physique.

The value sessions provide a large number of pin-hook opportunities for horse traders and trainers looking to take prospects through to the world renowned NZB Ready to Run Sale or to the trials, and in 2010 the sire selection for such buyers will be as diverse as ever.
