11 Freshman Sires to Inspect at NZB’s Weanling Sale

New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale is the first opportunity to cast your eye over 11 freshman sires whose progeny will make their sale ring debut at Karaka in May.

The selection of sires covers both New Zealand and Australian based stallions that went to stud in the 2013 breeding season, including two shuttle stallions from the northern hemisphere.

AZAMOUR (Night Shift)

Azamour was an undefeated Group 2 winning two-year-old and four-time European Group 1 winner. A shuttle stallion from Ireland, he visited New Zealand’s Brighthill Farm for just the one season and is already the sire of two Group 1 winners in the northern hemisphere including Dolniya, winner of the Group 1 Sheema Classic at the recent Dubai World Cup race meeting.

Azamour will be represented by six weanlings from his first and only New Zealand crop including Lot 204, a colt out of a half-sister to the dam of Precedence, twice Group 2 winner of the Moonee Valley Gold Cup,and dual Group 1 winner Tavistock, and Lot 324, a colt out of a half-sister to Group 1 New Zealand Oaks winner Boundless.

BURGUNDY (Redoute’s Choice)

From the successful Cambridge Stud operation is Burgundy, a son of Redoute’s Choice. A winner of five stakes races, including the Group 3 Cambridge Breeders’ Stakes, Burgundy is out of Group 1 winning Zabeel mare Grand Echezeaux, the dam of successful sire Darci Brahma.

Four weanlings are catalogued in the Sale by Burgundy, including a colt who is out of a half-sister to Group 2 winners Pure Energy and Segements (Lot 45), and a colt related to this season’s Group 1 New Zealand Oaks winner Savaria (Lot 170).

HE’S REMARKABLE (Pentire)

He’s Remarkable was a stakes performing son of Pentire winning six races, including the Group 3 Newmarket Handicap and was runner-up in the Group 1 Railway Stakes in Perth, controversially relegated after being first past the post.

Standing at Mapperley Stud, He’s Remarkable has a selection of 13 weanlings catalogued. Featuring in his draft is a daughter of Group 1 Australian Oaks winner On Air (Lot 82) and a filly out of a three-quarter-sister to Astrodame, winner of the Group 2 WH Stocks Stakes (Lot 295).

NIAGARA (Encosta de Lago)

Lime Country Thoroughbreds stallion is Niagara, a son of Australian Champion Sire Encosta de Lago. A stakes winner as a three-year-old in the Group 2 Ajax Stakes, he was ranked as one of the top Australian 3YO colts of his year.

There are eight of his progeny to be offered at the Sale, all colts, including Lot 321 a half-brother to Listed winner Twilight Granita (Iffraaj).

OCEAN PARK (Thorn Park)

New Zealand Horse of the Year Ocean Park won five Group 1 races on both sides of the Tasman. In a stellar run of form in the spring of his four-year-old year, Ocean Park won four straight Group 1 races, culminating the Group 1 Cox Plate.

Ocean Park is represented by 12 weanlings in the Sale including Lot 53, a filly who is out of a full-sister to Group 1 Victoria Derby winner Kibbutz, a half-brother to stakes winner Russian Conquest (Lot 203), a half-sister to stakes winner Ritzy Lady (Lot 293), and a colt who is a half-brother to Crepe De Chine, Arenti and Glam Slam,all stakes winners (Lot 314).

PIERRO (Lonhro)

Coolmore Stud sire Pierro was the winner of five Group 1 races in Australia, winning up to a mile distance. The Group 1 Golden Slipper winner is only the sixth two-year-old in history to complete the Australian two-year-old Triple Crown, he was the top-rated sprinting three-year-old in the world in 2013.

One filly sired by Pierro will go through the ring whose dam, Prestigious Miss, finished second in the Group 2 Hawke’s Bay Guineas and is a half-sister to the winner of the Group 3 Manawatu Cup Cassini.

POWER (Oasis Dream)

A Group 1 winner at two, Power won the Group 1 Curragh National Stakes as a juvenile before winning a second Group 1 race as a three-year-old in the Group 1 Irish Two Thousand Guineas.

The Cambridge Stud sire has four of his progeny catalogued including a daughter out of a stakes placegetter, Ransom Success, second in the Listed Welcome Stakes (Lot 116).

RELIABLE MAN (Dalakhani)

Westbury Stud’s Reliable Man is a Group 1 winner in both hemispheres. The grey stallion won the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes in Australia, defeating five-time Group 1 winner It’s A Dundeel. From a Derby producing sire line, he won the Group 1 French Derby as a three-year-old.

With three weanlings entered in the Sale, Reliable Man is represented by Lot 46, a colt out of a full-sister to winner of the Group 1 Captain Cook Stakes Hurrah and Hong Kong stakes performer Best Gift, and Lot 264, a colt out of stakes placegetter Clifton, who is a half-sister to stakes winner Stratofortress.

ROCK ‘N’ POP (Fastnet Rock)

The son of Champion Sire Fastnet Rock, Rock ‘n’ Pop is out of dual Group 1 winning Sir Tristram mare Popsy. The winner of the Group 1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas, Rock ‘n’ Pop stands at Waikato Stud.

Holding the largest draft of the first season sires, Rock ‘n’ Pop has 18 weanlings to go under the hammer, including a son of stakes winner One Man To Beat (Lot 83), a half-brother to Raid, winner of the Listed Lion Red Plate and runner-up in the Group 1 Diamond Stakes (Lot 191), a half-brother to the winner of the Listed Waikato Sprint Handicap Savour The Moment (Lot 277), and a colt out of Group 2 City of Auckland Cup winner Highflying (Lot 330).

SUPER EASY (Darci Brahma)

Singapore’s Horse of the Year and Champion 3YO in 2013, Super Easy earned his crowns by winning three Singapore Group 1 wins as a racehorse.

Among the Hallmark Stud sire’s progeny of 14 weanlings is a colt who is out of a half-sister to winner of the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes Sakana and Group 3 winner Rohatyn (Lot 55), and a half-brother to stakes winners Dancing Daggers – Hofmeister and Callanish (Lot 276).

YOUR SONG (Fastnet Rock)

The Australian-based stallion Your Song won the Group 1 BTC Cup by five-lengths as a three-year-old, also placing in two other Group level races before retiring to stud.

Lot 23 is Your Song’s only progeny in the Sale, out of Lavish Miss who is a full-sister to Hong Kong stakes-winner Hypurr – Sichuan Success (H.K.) and stakes placegetters Pirourettes and Yellow Diamond.

Also of interest will be sires that stood their first season at stud last year and have broodmares that are in foal to them entered in the National Broodmare Sale.

New Zealand sires to expect their first foals on the ground in the coming breeding season include Ferlax (Pentire), Jakkalberry (Storming Home) and Shamexpress (O’Reilly) who are all represented in the Sale.

Kiwi-bred Ferlax was a Group 1 winner as a three-year-old in Australia, winning the Group 1 Australian Guineas. Jakkalberry was an international Group 1 performer, winning a Group 1 in Italy and placing in the Group 1 Melbourne Cup. New Zealand sprinter Shamexpress was a Group 1 winner of the Newmarket Handicap down the famous Flemington straight course.

Australian based sires Eurozone (Northern Meteor), a Group 1 performing son of Northern Meteor, and USA stallion The Factor (War Front), a dual Group 1 winning sprinter, both went to stud in Australia last year and are also represented at the Sale.

New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale takes place on 11 – 13 May, with 349 weanlings being the first session of the Sale on Day 1 & 2. Also featuring on the second day is yearlings, two-year-olds, unraced stock and racehorses.

The third and final day will see the selling of 182 broodmares, followed by stallion shares. The Sale commences at 11am each day at the Karaka Sales Complex.
