A Quinella Of Roses For New Zealand Bloodstock In Gr.1 Arrowfield Stud Stakes

14 April 2003

Saturday's Group 1 Arrowfield Stud Stakes (2000m) at Sydney's Rosehill saw two very classy New Zealand bred fillies dominating the finish of this coveted race.

Shower of Roses (Zabeel x Marquise), trained by Gai Waterhouse, took the lead early in the race and held off fast finishing New Zealand Bloodstock Filly of the Year, Bramble Rose (Shinko King x Images) to take the win by length.

Coming home quickly to take third place honours a length behind Bramble Rose was another well-known runner to New Zealand racing, the Frank and Craig Ritchie trained filly Raspberry Ripple (Quest For Fame x Unbeleevable).

Shower of Roses was purchased by Gooree Stud of New South Wales for Mr Eduardo Cojuangco at the 2001 New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Yearling Sale. The filly topped the sale at a price of $1.45million and was sold through the draft of Sir Patrick Hogan's Cambridge Stud.

Bred by Malcolm Glenn And Matthew Oram, Shower of Roses is from the famous Eight Carat dynasty of racing greats, which includes the likes of Octagonal, Diamond Lover, Kaapstad, Don Eduardo, Viking Ruler and Viscount to name a few.

Mr Cojuangco also purchased Australasia's highest priced yearling from New Zealand Bloodstock back in 2000 when he paid $3.6million for Gr.1 Australian Derby winner Don Eduardo (Zabeel x Diamond Lover), who will stand his first season at stud this year at New Zealand's Fayette Park Stud.

Capping off a fantastic race for New Zealand Bloodstock was Bramble Rose's impressive run for second. Trained by Olympic Gold Medal Equestrian Mark Todd, Bramble Rose was also sold through New Zealand Bloodstock at the 2001 Select Fillies Sale. Todd purchased the filly for $32,000 from the draft of Esker Lodge of Cambridge. Bramble Rose won the Gr.1 New Zealand Oaks in January this year.

Shower Of Roses and Bramble Rose look set for a showdown again in the AJC Oaks at Randwick on April 26.
