Alagant Satin Slips in for Eulogy Win

15 December 2008

Alagant Satin swooped down the Awapuni strait on Saturday to claim the Group 3 Ezibuy Eulogy Stakes (1600m) and in doing so secured six points in the New Zealand Bloodstock Filly of the Year Series.

Taking her into fourth place on the leaderboard the Murray and Bjorn Baker-trained, Alagant Satin (Al Akbar x Glowing Satin by Noble Bijou) was guided by Jason Jago to finish a long neck ahead of Can't Keeper Down (Keeper x Ashley Downs by Grosvenor). Puttanesca (Bertolini x Tesoro by Prized) put in a huge run to come from near last at the home bend for third.

Bred by Kevin White, Alagant Satin is the tenth stakes winner for her sire Al Akbar, who stood at Grangewilliam Stud for the majority of his career before succumbing to a leg injury and colic last year. His most successful performer to date is the Group 1 NZ 2000 Guineas winner Hustler.

Alagant Satin now has a hat trick of wins to her credit plus a second placing from just six starts. Co-trainer Bjorn Baker indicated that depending on her work and recovery, she's headed for the two Group 2 filly races over Auckland Racing Club's Christmas Carnival, the Cambridge Stud Sir Tristram Fillies Classic (1600m) at Ellerslie on Boxing Day, followed by the New Zealand Bloodstock Royal Stakes (2000m) on New Year's Day.

Both races form part of the ten-race New Zealand Bloodstock Filly of the Year Series.

After getting back in Saturday's field current Series leader Daffodil (No Excuse Needed) was unable to run on enough to add to her 15 points while Juice (Bertolini) still sits on 13 and Awesome Planet (Giant's Causeway) on 7.5.
