Better Than Honour Boosts Karaka 09

5 November 2008

Fasig-Tipton's Kentucky November Sale in Lexington on Sunday provided an exciting result for Pencarrow Stud's Pins x Silver and Roses filly entered in the 2009 National Yearling Sale Series.

Silver and Roses (Sadler's Wells - Blush With Pride by Blushing Groom) is half-sister to the world record priced broodmare Better Than Honour (Deputy Minister), who sold for US$14 million at the Sale.

Better Than Honour is the dam of both the 2006 and 2007 Group 1 Belmont Stakes winners Jazil (Seeking the Gold) and Rags to Riches (A.P. Indy), as well as Group 2 winner Casino Drive (Mineshaft). The 12 year old mare was bought not in foal by Michael Moreno with bloodhorse.com declaring her the "Hope Diamond" in a Sale of "equine sapphires and emeralds", while Moreno himself told thoroughbredtimes.com that "she's the best mare in the world, she's a Picasso".

These accolades augur well for the seven-year-old Silver and Roses who shares the same Group 1 Oaks winning dam with her sire Sadler's Wells the progenitor of 71 individual Group 1 winners and the holder of 14 individual sire titles.

A further look through her pedigree reveals the successful stallions Try My Best, El Gran Senor, Northern Guest, Spinning World, Hurricane Sky, Umatilla, and Champion Redoute's Choice, as well as last year's European Champion three-year-old filly Peeping Fawn, who is out of Silver and Roses full-sister Maryinsky.

Pencarrow Stud manager Leon Casey describes the filly as "typical of her Group 1 winning grand-dam Blush With Pride, the same colour, and the same fantastic build".

Catalogues for the New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sales Series will be available from the beginning of December, with the Sale Series set for 26 January - 2 February 2009.
