Darci Delivers Highlight on Day 1 of NZB Weanling Sale

8 May 2013

New Zealand Bloodstock’s three-day National Weanling & Broodmare Sale got underway at Karaka today with local sire Darci Brahma providing the highlight of the 220 weanlings on offer.

The top lot came early on in proceedings at Lot 6, with Curraghmore Stud’s colt by Darci Brahma (Danehill) fetching $85,000 to the bid of Shane Crawford’s Regal Farm.

The colt is from the seven-time winning racemare Anca (Howbaddouwantit), a sister to the top Singapore performer Ace Aleta, and from the family of Hong Kong Horse of the Year Ambitious Dragon.

Lot 6 Day 1 Top

Lot 6 by Darci Brahma topped day 1 when sold for $85,000

“We came to the sale just to purchase him,” commented Crawford.  “We thought we might have to go a little bit higher for him as the good horses sold well today.”

“He is a lovely type of horse, with a lovely way about him and he will be a part of our racing team. We will put him out in the paddock now and break him in as a yearling and then see how he goes from there.”

Windsor Park Stud’s freshman sire Rip Van Winkle (Galileo) provided the second-top price of the day with his colt at Lot 172 fetching $75,000 to the bid of Tom Magnier. Offered by Mapperley Stud, the colt is from the winning Volksraad mare, Linnet.

The top lot contributed to Darci Brahma (Danehill) heading the sires table for the day by aggregate with five of his seven entries sold for $157,500 at an average of $31,500.

But it was Thorn Park who headed the sires table by average with four sold for an average of $36,250, including a top price of $55,000 for Lot 163, Little Avondale Stud’s colt from La Serenissime (Machiavellian) bought by Ascot Farm.

Astute pinhookers Bruce & Maureen Harvey of Ascot Farm were very active throughout the day, securing six youngsters for a total of $261,500 at an average of $43,583, to be the leader buyer of the session so far. Their purchases included four of the top 10 lots, including the top priced filly of the day at Lot 78, Bluegables Farm’s Savabeel filly from the unraced Dehere mare Eaudechloe, bought for $47,000.

As the leading weanling vendor for the past seven years in a row, Gordon Cunningham’s Curraghmore Stud looks set to keep its record intact by ending Day 1 as the leader by both aggregate and average, with nine of the Stud’s 10 entries sold for $288,500, at an average just over $32,000.

Curraghmore Stud has another 10 weanlings catalogued for sale tomorrow.

With 220 weanlings catalogued for sale today, so far 131 have sold for $1,462,100 at an average of $11,161 and clearance rate of 72%. The median is currently $5,000.

The three-day Sale continues tomorrow (Thursday) with a further 135 weanling entries (Lots 221 to 355), followed by horses-in-training, yearlings, two-year-olds, unraced stock and racehorses. The Sale concludes on Friday with the Broodmare session from Lots 430 to 658.
