Last year’s successful edition attracted a catalogue of 108 horses, and grossed $655,250. Top Lot was $82,500 for a Per Incanto-Silver Cent colt from Berkley Stud’s draft.

Berkley Stud was also the leading vendor by aggregate, with 10 lots sold for an aggregate of $152,000.

Entries are open for yearlings, two-year-olds, broodmares, stallion shares, as well as raced and unraced horses.

NZB’s 90-year history chronicles many of ‘the greats’ that will be forever imprinted in Australasian racing history. South Island bred horses and their breeders, owners, and trainers have delivered compelling results over the years.

One of the greats of New Zealand racing is Brian Anderton, a member of the NZ Racing Hall of Fame and this year was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit on the New Year’s Honours list. Brian and Lorraine Anderton, proprietors of White Robe Lodge, have been selling horses through both NZB and Wrightson’s Sales and they have decided in 2016 to solely catalogue their horses at NZB’s South Island Sale.

White Robe Lodge stood two Australasian champion sires Mellay and Noble Bijou. Noble Bijou is the only sire in the history of New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeding to have won both the general and broodmare sires list in the same year.

Group one winners Alibhai, Our Sophia and Who Shot Thebarman are among a host of winners bred by the Anderton’s.

As part of the National Yearling Sales Series, yearlings sold and passed in at the South Island Sale are eligible to be entered in the lucrative Karaka Million Series, including TWO million dollar races:

  • $1m Karaka Million –  For 2YO’s, in 2017
  • $1m Karaka 3YO Classic in 2018 – The Karaka 3YO Mile has a new name and a new purse, now called the Karaka Million 3YO Classic worth $1,000,000! This new million dollar race will suit those horses that excel over 1600m whilst also acting as a springboard into the Guineas races and the Derby for the classic three-year-olds.
  • Karaka Stayers Cup – From 2018, this race will be restricted to Karaka Million Series eligible horses.

Karaka Million deadlines for the South Island Sale are:

  • Nomination deadline: Monday 16 May 2016
  • Payment deadline: Thursday 30 June 2016
