Entries Closing for 2008 National Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale

10 March 2008

Entries for New Zealand Bloodstock's 2008 National Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale close this Wednesday, 12 March.

Set to be conducted at Karaka on 11, 12 & 13 May, this year's format will see the weanlings and broodmares reunited in a single Sale, in place of the stand-alone Weanling and Broodmare Sales held in May and July last year respectively.

New Zealand Bloodstock's National Broodmare Sale was moved to July in 2006 to take advantage of New Zealand's then-newly introduced tax changes affecting the depreciation regime for broodmares. That sale schedule was repeated again last year but, with the new Weanling Sale surging from strength to strength, the reuniting of the sessions promises the industry the benefit of a single bumper event.

New Zealand's weanling market has showed enormous promise in the last two years and the dedicated Weanling Session is garnering a firm foothold in the New Zealand sales calendar. The average price leaped 37% in the first year, and was up a further 9% last year to $12,421. With a strong 85% clearance rate the median soared 107% to $6,000 in 2006, and was up another 17% to $7,000 last year.

This year's Sale is already shaping up to be strong, with entries received from a number of leading vendors including large drafts from Waikato Stud, Little Avondale Stud and Trelawney Stud.

Entries for this Sale will be accepted for weanlings, broodmares, yearlings, raced horses, unraced horses, stallions and stallion shares.

The timing of this year's National Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale will result in two other changes to NZB's sales calendar: there will be no Autumn Mixed Bloodstock Sale in April, but added to the calendar will be the low cost Winter Mixed Bloodstock Sale in August.
