22 April 2008

Eskimo Queen (Shinko King x Cold Type by Icelandic) became the 16th individual Group 1 winning graduate of New Zealand Bloodstock sales so far this season, taking out the Group 1 STC Coolmore Classic (1500m) at Rosehill on Saturday.

The Mike Moroney trained mare stormed home in the final strides under Mark Zahra to win by one-and-a-quarter lengths to beat Hot Danish and Deloriane.

After starting her career in Moroney's New Zealand stable, Eskimo Queen was transferred to Australia for the Queensland Winter Carnival last year. Her first trans-Tasman start produced a third in the Group 3 Doomben Roses before a commanding three-and-a-half length win in the Group 1 Queensland Oaks.

Originally sold at the at the 2004 National Weanling, Broodmare and Mixed Bloodstock Sale for NZ$2,500 she was ultimately purchased by Paul Moroney Bloodstock for NZ$25,000 at the 2005 Ready to Run Sale from Te Runga Stud.

With four wins, two seconds and two third placings from 15 starts the versatile mare has won from 1200m to 2400m for almost AU$850,000 in prizemoney.

Now standing at Paxton Park, Shinko King, a son of Fairy King, boasts NZ Oaks winner Bramble Rose and Derby winner C'Est la Guerre as group 1 winning progeny.
