New Zealand Bloodstock's 2011 National Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale will provide the platform for the highly anticipated sale ring debut of the weanling progeny of this year's first season sires.

ALAMOSA (NZ) is one of the 11 sires having the first of their progeny offered at Karaka. New Zealand's Champion 3YO, Alamosa (O'Reilly x Lodore Mystic by Centaine) was a Group 1 winning two-year-old, a dual Group 1 winning three-year-old, including a Group 1 victory against the older horses, and an Australian Group 1 winning four-year-old.

The only sire-son of the outstanding sire O'Reilly, he has a draft of seven weanlings in the May Sale including:

  • Lot 10 from Curraghmore Stud, the filly from the stakes-placed mare Russian (Tribunal), a half-sister to the stakes winner Irene's Bonus Baby (Free at Last) and from the family of Group 1 winners Fabulous Notion (Deputy Minister) and sire Subordination (Livermore).

A half-brother to the Group 1 VRC Derby, Turnbull Stakes and Melbourne Cup winner in Efficient (NZ), Guillotine has a strong draft of 13 weanlings in the May Sale including:

  • Lot 40 from Windsor Park Stud, the colt from Sorbello (Golan), a half-sister to the stakes placed Volace, the family of the multiple Group 1 winner and sire Sky Chase (Star Way), Kindacross (Cape Cross) and Group 2 winner Respect (Zabeel).
  • Lot 343 from Blue Gables Farm, the colt from the young Centaine mare Our Chicaine, a full-sister to the Group three winner and Group 1 placed Resonare.

SIR PERCY (GB) (Mark of Esteem x Percy's Lass by Blakeney) - England's 2006 Champion 3YO (11-14f) - was one of only six horses to win the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes (1200m) at two, and the Group 1 Epsom Derby (2400m) at three, beating the champion race horse Dylan Thomas in the process.

Sir Percy has a small draft in the May Sale with two standout colts:

  • Lot 127 from Rich Hill Stud, the colt from the Royal Academy mare Biennale, a half-sister to the Group 1 winner Des's Dream (Dahar) and from the family of the multiple Group 2 winner Natural Blitz (Dehere).

The 2011 May Sale offers buyers the opportunity to secure the first progeny of these exciting young sires, with some strong pinhooking prospects on offer.

A number of buyers will be looking to back their judgement and identify the next hot young sire prospect in the knowledge that the progeny of a champion sire are rarely cheaper than in their first crop.

When looking at first season sires, there are few better examples to highlight the opportunities that await buyers than the story of High Chaparral. His first weanlings sold for an average of just $19,875, with his first yearlings selling for an average of $62,800. Compare that to 2011 where he had 33 yearlings sell for an average of $237,500 to see the potential that is on offer.

The exposure by New Zealand breeders to top internationally performed thoroughbreds continues to grow, with sires such as Iffraaj, Excellent Art, Street Sense and Haradasun all well received and selling well in the 2011 Karaka Yearling Sales. The 2011 May Sale will see the next wave of these internationally acclaimed sires through the NZB sale ring, with some promising young progeny on offer amongst the 370 weanling entries.

The 2011 National Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale will be held at the Karaka Sale Complex from 2-4 May. For a catalogue please contact NZB on 09 298 0055 or [email protected].
