Bloodstock agent Dean Hawthorne is among the early action and kiwi contingent of buyers at New Zealand Bloodstock’s 2018 National Yearling Sales Series.

On the first day of selling in Book 1, Hawthorne has paid $500,000 for a full sister to Hong Kong Horse of the Year Werther (NZ) (Tavistock) and current Group 3 winner Gobstopper (NZ) (Tavistock) with Highden Park offering the filly at Lot 48.

A son of the popular Cambridge Stud sire Tavistock, she is out of the winning Zabeel mare Bagalollies.

With plans for the filly to stay in New Zealand for six months, she will then head to Australia where her owners are based.

“She’s athletic, neat, and a good Tavistock filly,” said Hawthorne. “We love the pedigree and what the mares do.

“We have seen some nice fillies in this Sale and there are some nice Tavistock’s still to come.

With his sight set on securing staying types, Hawthorne comes to Karaka for one reason.

“The stayers in New Zealand are the best in the southern hemisphere.”

With 20 lots still to go under the hammer, Hawthorne has secured three lots so far for a total of $940,000 including a $300,000 Tavistock colt at Lot 35 and a $140,000 Iffraaj colt at Lot 64.
