Passed in at the 2022 Ready to Run Sale at Karaka, Gold Wolf (NZ) (Tivaci) emerged as a potential Group One South Australian Derby (2500m) contender with a potent finish in Saturday’s A$200,000 Listed Elvis Thurgood Galilee Series Final (2400m) at Caulfield.

Emerald Bloodstock secured Gold Wolf for $80,000 from Waikato Stud’s draft in Book 1 of Karaka 2022, then he returned for the Ready to Run Sale later that year and fell short of his $70,000 reserve. His eight-start career has now produced two wins, two placings and A$171,400 in stakes.

A close second in the Listed Tasmanian Derby (2200m) in February, Gold Wolf took on stronger opposition at Caulfield on Saturday and raised his game to a new level.

Gold Wolf was ridden by Neil Farley and settled near the back of the field before starting to build his momentum coming down the side of the track. His sustained run just kept getting stronger and stronger down the straight, surging through on the inside of the Group One performer Antrim Coast (NZ) (Roc De Cambes) to win by a head.

“The Derby and the St Leger (Listed, 2800m) are options for him,” co-trainer David Feek said.

“He was fantastic there. He was still very raw and I think he just continues to thrive in his environment He’s had a nice mix of mile jumpouts between his races and he just continues to learn and develop.”

The win was Farley’s first at stakes level.

“I can’t believe it,” he said. “This horse is a big work in progress, but he is starting to get the hang of it now.

“It was a good strong win and it helped he had something to run down as he showed plenty of fight in doing that.”
