Half-brother to Amelia's Dream and Elimbari at Karaka 2010

27 January 2010

With just days to go until Karaka 2010, we turn the spotlight on some of the lots of special interest, starting with the famed Cambridge Stud who once again offers its exceptional yearling draft exclusively at Karaka.

Along with 22 Zabeel progeny, Cambridge Stud's impressive line-up includes a Testa Rossa half-brother to Amelia's Dream and Elimbari amongst its 68 yearlings.

Amelia's Dream (Redoute's Choice x Shalt Not , by St Covet) may have only won two races from the Gai Waterhouse stable but it was the style of her victories which made her a household name immediately after her debut as a juvenile.

Headed for the richest juvenile race in the world, the Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m), Amelia's Dream made her first appearance on race day in the STC Bortoli Wines 2YO Handicap (1100m).

In a crushing performance she demolished her opposition by nine and a quarter lengths going away, a performance which quite simply took your breath away.

Waterhouse decided then to run her star filly in the Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m) and again Amelia's Dream proved several levels above her opposition in easing down to win by six and a quarter lengths.

Unbeaten, Amelia's Dream was installed as favourite for the Group 1 Golden Slipper before, in the aftermath of her scintillating Silver Slipper victory, she was found to have fractured cannon bone.

The injury for the filly described by regular pilot Nash Rawiller as "the best horse I have ever sat on" would prove the end of her racing career but not before showing the world what an engine she clearly possessed.

At Lot 157 in the Karaka Premier Sale is a half-brother to Amelia's Dream, a brown colt by Testa Rossa (click here for video). Their dam, Listed Doomben Slipper winning juvenile Shalt Not, is proving to be an exceptional producer with six foals to race including five winners and a dual place-getter, Youbolt (Exceed and Excel), who is only a three-year-old.

Her latest winner Elimbari (Fastnet Rock), a three quarter sister to Amelia's Dream, won on debut for her trainer Kris Lees on 16 January and she clearly looks to have inherited the family's natural ability.

Like her close relation she is pointed at the Group 1 Golden Slipper on 3 April in Sydney.

The family also includes Group 1 BMW Stakes winner Grand Zulu (Grand Lodge) and West Australian stakes-performers Field Commander (Regal Classic) and Cation (Catrail).

By the same sire as Rostova and Ortensia, Cambridge Stud's Testa Rossa colt has arrived safely at Karaka and began parading for prospective buyers earlier this morning.

New Zealand Bloodstock's National Yearling Sales Series (1-8 February) begins at 11am on Monday, 1 February.
