High Calibre Drafts at NZB Weanling & Broodmare Sale

NZB’s National Weanling & Broodmare Sale next week (12 & 13 May) features some interesting vendors, with a number of dispersals among the catalogue.

Cambridge Stud has 23 horses entered for unreserved sale, including 7 weanlings and 16 broodmares. Six of the mares are by prolific broodmare sire Zabeel. The draft includes:

  • Lot 76 – A weanling filly by Tavistock out of a half-sister to Group 2 winners Pure Energy (Mossman) and Segments (Mossman), both Group 1 placegetters.
  • Lot 246 – A weanling filly by Sakhee’s Secret out of dual Group 3 winning mare Blackrock College (Volksraad) and a half-sister to the Listed placed Sultry Assassin (Keeper). Her dam Magravine (Last Tycoon) is also catalogued for sale at Lot 375.
  • Lot 280 – A weanling filly by Keeper out of a half-sister to Group 2 winner Astrodame (Flying Spur).
  • Lot 348 – Broodmare J’Abeel (Zabeel), the dam of Listed winner Baby Guinness (Stravinsky). Believed to be in foal to Power.
  • Lot 400 – Broodmare Oh Carlinda (Carnegie), daughter of Listed winner Zalinda (Zabeel) and half-sister to Group 3 winner and sire Fast ‘n’ Famous (Redoute’s Choice). Believed to be in foal to Power.
  • Lot 438 – Broodmare Seraphina (Montjeu), a daughter of triple Listed winner Greta Hall (Kaapstad) and half-sister to the promising current galloper Angelica Hall (Guillotine). Believed to be in foal to Burgundy.

Boutique Matamata nursery Ancroft Stud has elected not to sell at the National Yearling Sales Series next year, and instead will focus its entire crop on the National Weanling Sale. The Stud’s draft includes:

  • Lot 114 – A colt by Redwood out of dual Group 3 winner Palos Verdes (Oak Ridge) and a half-brother to four-time Group 1 winner and Group 1 Cox Plate hero El Segundo (Pins).
  • Lot 125 – A colt by Pins out of dual Listed winner on both sides of the Tasman Post Thyme Postponed.
  • Lot 166 – A colt by Pins out of Group 3 Eulogy Stakes runner-up Somethymesoon (Postponed) who is a sister to Post Thyme.
  • Lot 276 – A colt by Rip Van Winkle out of multiple stakes placegetter Electrostatic (Elnadim) who is a half-sister to Group 2 winners Coup Ray (Exploding Prospect) and Singalong (Danasinga).
  • Lot 46 – The only weanling by boom sire High Chaparral in the Sale, this filly is out of a half-sister to Group 2 winner Our Famous Eve (Fast ‘n’ Famous).

Sir Owen Glenn has enjoyed great success recently through Group 1 Australian Derby winnerCriterion (Sebring), bred and owned by him. Glenn breeds under Go Bloodstock NZ and has a number of well-related horses catalogued in the Sale through Blandford Lodge including:

  • Lot 42 – A weanling filly by Cape Blanco out of Australian Group 3 winner Just Polite (Dehere). Her yearling half-sister by Dylan Thomas is also in the Sale at Lot 287 along with their dam Just Polite at Lot 349.
  • Lot 340 – Broodmare Happy Forever (Dr Fong), the daughter of four-time Group 1 winner in New Zealand and USA Happyanunoit (Yachtie). Believed to be in foal to Ocean Park.
  • Lot 416 – Broodmare Quatro (Rock of Gibraltar), the daughter of Group 1 Australian Oaks winner My Brilliant Star (Copper Kingdom).
  • Lot 445 – Broodmare Shock (Keeper), a dual Listed placegetter as a three-year-old.
  • Lot 495 – Broodmare Bella Renza (Van Nistelrooy), the winner of the Listed Westbury Classic.
  • Lot 525 – Broodmare Dandee Topwin (Danewin), a winner of five races in Australia and runner-up in the Group 3 Adrian Knox Stakes. Believed to be in foal to Pins.

John Street’s successful racing and breeding operation Lincoln Farms is offering seven broodmares in the quality Waikato Stud draft, which includes:

  • Lot 366Lincoln’s Girl (Show a Heart), a winning daughter of Australian stakes performer Miss Rogers (Danehill Dancer). Served by Rios.
  • Lot 384Miss Annaliese (Don Eduardo), a winning full-sister to dual Australian Listed winner Moti (Don Eduardo). Served by Rock ‘n’ Pop.
  • Lot 430Samantha Jane (Danasinga), a winner of five races and out of Listed placegetter Court Olea (Pompeii Court). Served by No Excuse Needed.
  • Lot 491Azapak (Volksraad), a dual winning daughter of Azabeel (Zabeel), runner-up in the Group 3 Canterbury Gold Cup. Served by Rios.

Laurence Eales’ Eales Racing Ltd Ptyhas entered 11 horses in the Supplementary catalogue through Rich Hill Stud. Resident Rich Hill Stud sire Shocking carried Laurence Eales’ colours to victory in the Group 1 Melbourne Cup. Among their seven weanlings and four broodmares for unreserved sale are:

  • Lot 546 – A weanling filly by leading Australian first season sire I Am Invincible out of Star Band (Dixieland Band), a half-sister to international stakes winners Common World (Spinning World) and Speciale (War Chant). Star Brand is also catalogued for sale at Lot 567.
  • Lot 549 – A weanling filly by Shocking and a half-sister to Australian Listed placegetters Capital Commander (Commands) and Little Favours (Falvelon). Her dam Chicken Little (Telesto) is also catalogued for sale at Lot 568.
  • Lot 569 – Broodmare Dixie Parade (Dixie Union) is a half-sister to dual stakes winner in the US Epic Honor (Honor Grades).
  • Lot 571 – Broodmare Enchelle (End Sweep) is the daughter of Listed Australian winner All Imagination (Loosen Up) and a half-sister to stakes placegetter Trips – Best Brothers (Mac.) (Naturalism).

Gordon Cunningham’s Curraghmore Stud has been the leading vendor at the National Weanling Sale for the past eight consecutive years and once again has a strong draft of weanlings and broodmares that includes:

  • Lot 88 – A weanling colt by Savabeel out of Listed winner and Group 1 placegetter Mill Duckie(Magic Ring).
  • Lot 149 – A weanling colt by Swiss Ace out of dual Group 2 winner Sarajay (Danasinga).
  • Lot 188 – A weanling filly by O’Reilly out of Listed winner The Beekeeper (Keeper).
  • Lot 193 – A weanling colt by Cape Blanco out of dual Listed winner and Group 1 placed mare Tip the Wink (Stravinsky).
  • Lot 401 – Broodmare O’Marine (O’Reilly), the dam of Listed placegetter Never Die (Scaredee Cat), out of Group 3 winner Marnies Magic (Grosvenor).

There are 70 vendors with horses catalogued in New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale on 12 & 13 May at Karaka. The first day of selling commences with the Weanling Session on Monday 12 May. The second day of the Sale (Tuesday 13 May) features the Broodmare & mixed bloodstock sessions.
