International Mare Tops Winter Sale

2 August 2013

The Irish-bred mare Sinnfonia (Sinndar) provided the highlight of today’s Winter Mixed Bloodstock Sale at Karaka, selling for $61,000.

Catalogued at Lot 26, Sinnfonia is a race-winning daughter of Group 1 Epsom Derby winner Sinndar (Grand Lodge) and a half-sister to international stakes performers Burano (Dalakhani) and Kalidaha (Cadeaux Genereux).

Knocked down to Dan Myers and Kevin O’Hara’s boutique breeding operation in Hawera, Sinnfonia’s prestigious bloodlines increased her appeal as a broodmare prospect.

“It was her international pedigree that brought her to our attention, with the European broodmares going so well down here we though some international blood would be handy from a selling point of view” commented Kevin.

Offered on the account of J.P. Wills, Sinnfonia was sold as a breeding proposition and has not yet been to stud.

“We have not decided who will cover her and are looking for a nice husband for her now,” said Kevin.

Also heading to Hawera is the second top Lot of the day Shanstar, Lot 77, purchased by Onyx Thoroughbreds for $50,000 from the draft of Seven Oaks Park.

Shanstar is by champion sire Pins and is a half-sister to Group 3 winner Diademe (Savabeel). She was sold as a racing and breeding proposition.

The leading vendor by aggregate was The Estate of J.W. Campin with 24 lots sold for $172,600 at an average of $7,192. These were among the last horses of the much respected Jim Campin to be sold at auction.

J.P. Wills, the vendor of the top Lot, ended the day as the leading vendor by average (for two or more horses sold) with two horses selling for $70,000 with an average of $35,000.

In all, 107 lots were catalogued with 79 horses sold at an average of $5,953 and a clearance rate of 84%, up slightly from 83% last year.

The median price increased substantially on last year’s Sale reaching $2,750, an increase of 206% from 2012.

A highlight earlier in the day was the stallion parade with some of New Zealand’s best stallions on display in the Karaka Sales Ring. The quality of bloodstock was appreciated by the crowd at Karaka with some spectators purely coming to Karaka to inspect the sires.

Attention now turns to the South Island Sale of Two-Year-Olds & Mixed Bloodstock which will be held next Friday August 9 at Canterbury Agricultural Park from 12pm.
