KARAKA 2005: NZ Govt. Shows Support for Yearling Sales

18 January 2005

The New Zealand Government has shown its support for the New Zealand thoroughbred industry by agreeing to conduct the official opening of New Zealand Bloodstock's National Yearling Sales Series at Karaka on 31st January.

Minister for Racing Damien O'Connor has accepted an invitation by New Zealand Bloodstock to formally welcome buyers and vendors to Karaka prior to the first of over 1,400 lots going under the hammer from 11am.

"The Government is very proud to support New Zealand Bloodstock and the New Zealand thoroughbred industry. The National Yearling Sales Series is an exciting and important event in the industry's calendar. Once again, New Zealand Bloodstock has done a fantastic job promoting New Zealand-bred bloodstock both here and overseas. I expect the hard work of all industry participants will be rewarded by a very successful sale," commented the Minister.

Prime Minister Helen Clark is unable to attend the opening due to prior Government commitments, but has confirmed her intention to attend New Zealand Bloodstock's welcome function for the international buyers attending the Sales Series.

Marketing & Public Relations Manager, Petrea Vela, said, "We are honoured to have the Government's support and recognition in this way. We will be welcoming leading thoroughbred owners, trainers and bloodstock agents from around the world to Karaka next week, and this gesture by the Prime Minister and Minister for Racing is a great way to show these buyers our appreciation for their support of the New Zealand industry."

The Premier Sale will be conducted from 31st January to 2nd February, the Select Sale is 3rd & 4th February and the Festival Sale is 6th & 7th February.
