KARAKA 2006: Strong Opening Session at Select Sale

2 February 2006

It has been a very strong day ringside at Karaka, on this the first day of the New Zealand Bloodstock Select Sale.

The difficulty buyers have had securing all the horses they wanted over the past three days was evidenced by the strength of the buying power today. The day saw 284 yearlings catalogued for sale, with 195 sold for an aggregate of $7,218,750, up 5.6% after the same number offered last year. Last year's aggregate after 284 lots was $6,832,500.

At the close of selling the average price was $37,019 up 9.7% on the final Select Sale average last year of $33,740, with the median at the same level as this point in the Sale last year, at $30,000. The clearance rate was low early in the day, but climbed steadily throughout the afternoon to finish at a pleasing 77%, up from 72% at the end of Day 1 last year.

For the second day this week it was the fillies who were to the fore, claiming the two highest prices of the day. The top lot of the day came at Lot 603, a filly by Stravinsky out of Flying Spur mare, Stilts, which was purchased by Mr Kevin Hickman of Christchurch for $130,000. Following on from the success of Stravinsky at the Premier session, the Cambridge Stud sire is heading the tables at the Select Sale with 4 sold for an average of $75,500.

The second highest price of the day was achieved by Lot 536, a filly by Waikato Stud resident sire, Pins, out of Centaine mare, Roaring Meg, bought for NZ$125,000.

First season sires Van Nistelrooy and Don Eduardo were both represented by six figure colts. The third highest price of the day was for the Van Nistelrooy colt at Lot 792, out of Debora (Sir Tristram) from Trelawney Stud, purchased by Kieran Moore Bloodstock for $120,000. This puts Kieran Moore Bloodstock third on the leading buyers list with 3 yearlings purchased for a total of $250,000.

The colt by Don Eduardo at Lot 541 was bought by New Zealand trainer, John Sargent, for $100,000. The fourth highest priced lot of the day, from the draft of Willowbank Stud in Morrinsville, is out of Rubiton mare, Rubiton's Best. Also $100,000 was Lot 605, a colt from Blackbridge Stables in Karaka, by Pentire out of Straight Cut Jeans (by Straight Strike), bought by Tony Pike Bloodstock.

Although a predominantly local buying bench, many international buyers are still at Karaka and active in this session with results sheets recording buyers from Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Macau, Japan and the Philippines.

Leading buyer at this session so far is New Zealand buyer, Paul Moroney, with 8 yearlings purchased for $376,500. These include the second highest priced lot of the day at Lot 536. Moroney adds these to 4 purchases made at the Premier Sale to the value of $350,000.

Next leading buyer was James Bester Bloodstock who bought 5 yearlings for an aggregate of $291,500, including his top priced lot at Lot 787, a colt by Montjeu out of Flying Spur mare, Dancing On, for $85,000.

The leading vendor by aggregate is Windsor Park Stud, with 21 sold for a total of $746,500. The Stud's top price came at Lot 699, a colt by Commands out of Zabeel mare, All Zalute, which was knocked down to the bid of Tony Pike for $77,500. Windsor Park Stud's Select Sale yearlings have so far sold for an average of $35,548.

The leading vendor by average with three or more yearlings sold today was Mr & Mrs TM Henderson of Auckland, who sold four for an average of $63,000. Their top priced lot was the top lot of the day at Lot 603.

The second day of the Select Sale commences tomorrow at 11am at Karaka. For full results, and the final day of New Zealand Bloodstock's live webcast, visit www.nzb.co.nz.
