KARAKA 2008: Catcher in the Rye Sets New Festival Sale Record
3 February 2008
New Zealand Bloodstock's two-day Festival Sale got underway at Karaka today, with the success of last week flowing into the third and final session of the 82nd National Yearling Sales Series.
The highlight came when a new Festival Sale record top price was set with the colt by Danehill son Catcher in the Rye fetching $80,000 to the bid of Dreambig Thoroughbreds from Queensland. Offered by Monty & Judy Henderson's Bluegables Farm, the colt from Taufan mare Laundrette is a half-brother to NZ Champion 2YO of his year, Thriller (Volksraad).
With 403 horses catalogued at the 2008 Festival Sale it is a substantially bigger offering than the 310 at this session last year, yet the momentum picked up over the course of the day to show healthy increases on last year's figures.
At the halfway point in the Sale, 148 horses have been sold for an average of $15,094, up 20% on last year's final average of $12,593, and currently exceeding the record of $14,022 set in 2004. Similarly the record median of $10,000 achieved last year has increased 10% to end the day at $11,000.
Total takings so far are $2,249,050 compared with $2,795,700 at the close of the Sale last year. The clearance rate is currently a strong 82% with one day and 203 yearlings to go.
The leading individual buyer at this session is currently Oaklands Thoroughbreds of Karaka, with three yearlings bought at this session for $86,000, with a top price of $50,000 for the Handsome Ransom colt from Illuminate (Desert Sun) purchased from Maara Grange.
Other buyers at this session include Collett Racing Stables, John Sargent, Tony Pike, Dean Wiles, Robert Roulston, Chris Wood, Paul Moroney and Mr KW Lim of Singapore.
The Festival Sale continues tomorrow (Monday 4 February) at Karaka from 11am.
