KARAKA 2010: Momentum Continues at Karaka Select

The momentum continued on Day Two of New Zealand Bloodstock's three-day Select session today at Karaka, with the highlight of the day's trade coming late in proceedings with the $200,000 Elusive Quality colt at Lot 879.
Offered by Haunui Farm, the current leading vendors by aggregate, the colt from the Bluebird mare Blue Quail was knocked down to the bid of local bloodstock agent, Phil Cataldo, for his Melbourne-based client.
"He's got a magnificent physique, a great front on him and a deep girth - I rated him as the best colt in the sale," Phil commented.
"I've also had a bit of luck with the family, purchasing My Royal Captain who won his first three races in a row before winning Singapore's Group 1 Patron's Bowl. This colt reminded me of My Royal Captain and I've loved him since we saw him at Haunui just over a month ago.
"He's a quality colt and quite mature so he's been entered for the Karaka Million."
The second top price was just the second lot of the day, at Lot 692. Following the strong demand for the sire's progeny seen earlier in the week, the colt by Pentire fetched $170,000 to the bid of New South Wales buyer, Edward Murray. Offered by Denny & Mark Baker's Hallmark Stud, the colt is from the winning Danehill mare Sheza Gem.
After 417 of the 618 catalogued lots, the current average of $52,061 is tracking a massive 39% ahead of last year's final Select Sale average of $37,366, with the median following suit, 33% ahead of last year's $30,000 at $40,000.� The clearance rate has strengthened further to finish the day on 79%.
Turnover so far for the Select Sale is $15,878,500 for 305 lots sold, and is set to fly past last year's final turnover of $17,039,000 for 456 lots sold.
Most active on the buyers bench today was Rogerson Bloodstock with 5 more yearlings to add to his haul of�21 so far for the week. Rogerson's top price of the day was $115,000 paid for the O'Reilly colt at Lot 826 from Kinjite mare, Activate.
Next on the buyers list is Australia's BC3 Thoroughbreds with two Select Sale purchases today to bring their total to four at Select and three from Premier. Queensland agent John Foote's $145,000 purchase late in the piece at Lot 897�saw him equal BC3, both spending $500,000 on their respective purchases at Select.
So far featuring most prominent on the sires list with the highest average, at $119,167 for three horses sold is Windsor Park Stud sire Golan. His top price at this session is� $160,000 for Lot 665 from Henley Park with Hong Kong agent Dan O'Donnell the purchaser.
The third day of the three-day Select Sale will commence at 11am tomorrow from Lot 901, and will be streamed live online. The two-day Festival Sale will follow on Sunday and Monday (7 & 8 February).
