Karaka Million and Karaka 3YO Mile Draw Tomorrow

26 January 2010

The barrier draw for the 2010 Karaka Million will be announced live on Radio Trackside at 12.10pm tomorrow by Peter Earley and Butch Castles, followed by the draw announcement for the inaugural $200,000 Karaka 3YO Mile.

Strong nominations will see both the $1,000,000 Karaka Million and $200,000 Karaka 3YO Mile be contested by capacity fields including many of New Zealand's leading racehorses in each age group.

Karaka Million on Black

New Zealand's richest juvenile race, the Karaka Million, will be contested for the third time on Sunday and in 2010 the excitement and build up has been unparalled.

Nominations have totalled 18 for the 14 horse field which is based on race-track earnings, the lowest earnings eliminated until the final 14 has been determined.

Leading the nominations is Mark Walker's Big River (General Nediym) with $33,025 in prize-money. The winner of the Listed Wellesley Stakes (1000m) is one of two strong chances for the Walker stable, the other being last start Ellerslie winner Icepin (Pins).

The top 17 entrants in the current Karaka Million order of entry have all nominated for the race, bar Encosta Diablo as reported earlier, leaving Nacho Man (Mr Nancho) as the lucky last to complete the field.

The Karaka 3YO Mile can be contested by up to 18 horses safely and all horses nominated look set to get a start in the event with the likely withdrawal of Katie Lee (Pins) who, in following the NZB Filly of the Year Series, will contest the Group 3 Desert Gold Stakes (1600m) at Trentham on Saturday.

The field is likely to be headed by lastSaturday's Group 3 Grant Plumbing Wellington Stakes (1600m), and Group 2 Avondale Guineas winner, Joey Massino (O'Reilly).

Radio Trackside's barrier draw announcement will also be streamed live on the Tab website (http://www.tab.co.nz/) at 12.10pm tomorrow. An in-depth look at both fields will be available on the NZB website on Thursday.

New Zealand Bloodstock's National Yearling Sales Series (1-8 February) begin on Monday with selling getting underway at 11am each day.
