Kiwi Stallion Ranks Packed with Emerging Talent

New Zealand boasts an outstanding line-up of both proven and highly promising sires. Those ranks have been further boosted in the last couple of seasons with an intake of exciting youngsters.

Alamosa was a Group 1 winner at two, three and four and he made a smart start to his breeding career at Wellfield Lodge when he was New Zealand’s leading first season sire. In the following spring his first-crop daughter Kirramosa (NZ) won the Group 1 Victoria Oaks and Group 2 Wakeful Stakes.

A son of champion sire O’Reilly, he will offer four of his yearlings including:

  • Lot 790 a colt out Group winner and multiple Group place getter Dawn Ghost.

The Cambridge Stud-based Burgundy was a $1.3 million yearling purchased at Karaka who went on to win seven races, five at stakes level, and was Group 1-placed. His first crop featured the stakes winner Hard Merchandize (NZ) who also triumphed in last season’s Group 2 Hawke’s Bay Guineas, and he has also sired the star filly Dijon Bleu (NZ) to win three stakes races in a row this season.

A three-quarter brother to Darci Brahma, there will be 19 yearlings catalogued including:

Highly Recommended commenced stud duties at the South Island-based Berkley Stud and will join the roster next season at Cambridge Stud. He sired three winners in his first crop including stakes winner Waldorf (NZ) and black-type place getter Joyfilly (NZ). This season, Sumstreetsumwhere (NZ) stepped out to win the Group 2 Waikato Memorial Stakes.

A Group winning son of Fastnet Rock, he will offer 12 yearlings at Karaka including:

  • Lot 1011 a full brother to Waldorf and half-brother to Group winner Timy Tyler.
  • Lot 1071 a full brother to the Group 1 performer Joyfilly.

The final New Zealand conceived crops of former Westbury Stud shuttler Makfi will be offered at Karaka following his sale to Japan. Himself a multiple Group 1-winning miler, he has produced high-class stayers such as the last two Australian Oaks winners, Karaka graduates and NZB Filly of the Year title holders Bonneval (NZ) and Sofia Rosa (NZ).

There will be 26 progeny of Makfi catalogued across Book 1 and Book 2 including:

  • Lot 4 a half-brother to dual Group 1 winner Humidor.
  • Lot 71 a full brother to star filly Sofia Rosa.
  • Lot 103 a half-brother to two Group winners Chenille and Chintz.

Impeccable racetrack credentials saw Ocean Park crowned Horse of the Year, and following his success retired to stud at Waikato Stud. He won eight races including five Group 1 features and he has sired the stakes winner Ocean Jewel and stakes performer Ocean’s Fourteen (NZ).

A leading first season sire, he will be represented by 60 youngsters including:

  • Lot 275 a colt out of NZB Filly of the Year and Group 1 winner Insouciant.
  • Lot 468 a colt out of Group 1 winning mare Pernod making him a half-brother to multiple Group winner Martini Red.

A flurry of two-year-old winners from the first crop of Little Avondale Stud’s Per Incanto boosted the start of his stud career. Group 1 winner Dal Ceilo (NZ), stakes winner and Group 1 place getter Rocanto (NZ) and stakes winner Tennessee (NZ) emerged in the 2014-15 season and has remained a fruitful producer of winners with the likes of Group 2 Guineas winner Saracino (NZ) and current Group 2 winning miler Shadows Cast (NZ). He has also had recent success with Hong Kong winners Time to Celebrate (NZ) and Morethanlucky.

The son of Street Cry will offer a crop of 42 yearlings at Karaka 2018 including:

Dual Group 1 winner and Cambridge Stud sire Power is the reigning Leading First Season Sire. Forging the way for the son of Oasis Dream has been the star three-year-old filly Gift of Power (NZ) who has won seven of her 10 starts including the Group 2 Wakefield Challenge Stakes.

The sire of five individual Group or Stakes winners will have 22 of his yearlings at Karaka including:

A Group 1 winning son of High Chaparral, Westbury Stud’s Redwood has sired 19 winners to date from his first three-year-old crop. His leading progeny include stakes winner Romancer (NZ) and stakes performers Swampland (NZ), Rosewood (NZ), Rising Red (NZ) and High Mode (NZ).

From a high-class European family, Redwood will have 27 youngsters including:

Westbury Stud’s Reliable Man was a Group 1 winner in both hemispheres with victories in France and at Randwick. He has already been represented by the Group 1-placed Belle du Nord (NZ) and this season’s flurry of winners including Group 3 winners Erasmus and Narella, Group 1 Derby place getter Sully (NZ) and Listed winner Main Stage (NZ).

There will be a crop of 58 yearlings at Karaka including:

  • Lot 34 a filly out of Group 1 Oaks winner Arapaho Miss making her a half-sister to stakes winner De Little Engine.
  • Lot 39 a colt out of Group 1 winning Oaks mare Artistic.
  • Lot 466 a half-brother to two stakes winners including three-time Group 1 winner Keep the Peace.

Windsor Park Stud resident Rip Van Winkle retired to stud with a career record of three Group 1 wins. A son of Galileo, he has sired 40 stakes performers in both hemisphere headed by Group 1 winner Dick Whittington in Ireland and Group 2 winners on home turf Capella (NZ) and Lasarla (NZ).

Rip Van Winkle will be represented by 15 youngsters including:

  • Lot 52 a colt out of Group 2 Waikato Gold Cup winner Bak da Chief.
  • Lot 245 a half-sister to two black-type performers.

Rich Hill Stud’s Shocking added the Group 1 titles of Melbourne Cup and Australian Cup to his belt as well as the Group 2 Makybe Diva Stakes which is now a Group 1. The son of Street Cry has passed that stamina and class on to his progeny with the likes of Group 1 New Zealand Oaks winner Fanatic (NZ) and Brisbane Cup winner Chocante (NZ).

Shocking will be represented by 23 youngsters including:

  • Lot 174 a half-brother to two black-type performers Sea Lord and Dreamcrafter.
  • Lot 499 a filly out of multiple Group 1-winning mare Prize Lady.

A proven Group 1 producing stallion, Haunui Farm’s Showcasing was a Group 2 winner and Group 1 performer himself. A victory in the Karaka Million 2YO with Hardline (NZ) from his first crop came quickly followed by another three stakes-performing two-year-olds earning him champion first season sire. He is also the sire of dual Group 1 winner in the norther hemisphere Quiet Reflection.

The reigning New Zealand Leading Sire of 2YO winners will offer a crop of 30 yearlings including:

  • Lot 202 a full sister to Karaka 3YO Mile winner and Group 1 performer Raghu.
  • Lot 376 a full brother to Karaka Million winner Hardline.

Out of the New Zealand Broodmare of the Year Parfore (NZ), Super Easy was a Singapore superstar winning 15 of his 23 starts including nine stakes races. Now a resident of Hallmark Stud, he has made a bright start with Prom Queen (NZ) a stakes winner at two and adding two Group 3 titles to her belt.

The Singapore Horse of the Year will offer 20 progeny including:

One of the South Island’s most exciting stallion prospects, Zacinto has already been represented by 25 winners including Group 1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas winner Ugo Foscolo (NZ) and Listed winners Zigwig (NZ) and Odeon (NZ). He has also sired the impressive debut winner in Hong Kong Namjong Plus (NZ).

Inglewood Stud’s son of the great Dansili will be represented by 13 yearlings including:

  • Lot 277 a half-brother to Group winner She Brings Joy.
