Leading 2YO Sale Reaches New Heights

Day 2 of NZB's Ready to Run Sale continued to impress after setting the highest ever recorded average at an Australasian two-year-old sale of $108,210 on Day 1.
In 2015 the Sale broke a record having surpassed an aggregate of $20 million, and today, reached new major milestones surpassing the $30 million mark for the first time in the history of any Australasian two-year-old sale.
The aggregate at the close of selling reached $31,215,000 for 290 horses sold increasing by 10% from last year’s $28,393,000, while the average climbed to $107,638 from last year’s record $96,575. The clearance rate at the end of the Sale was a healthy 77%.
NZB managing director Andrew Seabrook was extremely pleased with the quality of buyers across the two days of selling.
“The buying bench was more like what we see at K1 and all the figures confirm that this has been the best two-year-old sale in Australasia, ever.
“It’s been great to see purchasers from all our main markets here in force and competition has been strong.
“The results achieved over the last two days truly reflects the quality of the product, and hard work by our vendors – it’s wonderful to see them so handsomely rewarded”.
The top price of the day came at Lot 379 for the grey colt by Westbury Stud’s Reliable Man. Breezing up in a time of 11.27 seconds, he was offered through Phoenix Park and purchased for $430,000 by Hong Kong-based Upper Bloodstock. Day 1 saw another Phoenix Park-consigned grey colt by Reliable Man, Lot 199, secured by Bluesky Bloodstock and Gai Waterhouse Racing for $310,000.
The Hinchinbrook colt, Regal Farm’s Lot 106, secured by Hong Kong-based Sweetbriar Equine on Day 1 retained the highest price of the Sale at $460,000.
The strength of the bench was evident in the number of horses that sold for $300,000 or more, with 19 horses reaching that figure, an increase from the 13 in 2016 which in itself was a record. In total there were a record 46 horses that sold for $200,000 or more over the course of the Sale.
For the second consecutive year the leading buyer of the Sale was Te Akau principal David Ellis purchasing 10 horses for $1,585,000. Securing one of the top lots from Day 1, Ellis won the bid on the Savabeel gelding catalogued at Lot 192 and consigned by Lyndhurst Farm when knocked down for $350,000.
“It was the biggest buying bench I have ever seen at the Ready to Run Sale and it was very successful for the vast majority of vendors,” commented Ellis.
“There will be some serious racehorses to come out of this Sale because of the top quality on offer.
“I bought ten horses and shares are selling unbelievable quickly.”
Yulong Investment was another name to figure prominently across the two days of selling purchasing a total of 16 horses for receipts of $1,242,000. With an average of $77,625, the highest price outlaid by the group was when they successfully offered $350,000 for Lot 228, an O’Reilly colt from the draft of Ohukia Lodge.
Australia was the leading buying bench with 97 horses purchased for $10,239,500. The leading buyer from Australia was Victoria Peak Bloodstock who purchased nine horses for a total of $960,000.
The second leading country by spend was Hong Kong, purchasing 51 horses for a total of $9,935,000 – over $2.7 million more than they spent last year. The leading buyer from Hong Kong was trainer Ricky Yiu, who was the third leading buyer across the two days, purchasing six horses for a total of $1,240,000.
At the end of Day 1 perennial consignor Lyndhurst Farm had sold five two-year-olds for an aggregate of $1,430,000 at an average of $286,000 reflecting the quality offered in their draft. At the end of Day 2 their figures rounded out to a healthy aggregate of $2,105,000 at an average of $233,889 for nine lots sold earning them the title of leading vendor by average.
Riversley Park set a strong pace at the start of Day 2 and gained the leading vendor by aggregate title selling 22 horses for a total of $3,425,000. Lot 222, a son of I Am Invincible, fell to the $370,000 bid of ABC Bloodstock. Three lots later another Riversley Park-consigned juvenile, Lot 225, struck interest with Orbis Bloodstock and Anthony Freedman who secured the Lope de Vega gelding for $300,000.
The leading sire by aggregate table saw a trifecta by top kiwi sires with Tavistock sitting at the top (16 lots sold for $2,473,000), followed by Reliable Man (12 lots sold for $2,135,000) and Savabeel (four lots sold for $1,190,000). Tavistock appeared in the top three prices on both days of selling.
The leading sire by average (three or more sold) was Hinchinbrook with three lots sold for an average of $303,333.
