Mares in Foal to Boom Stallions Set to Star in Winter Sale

The upcoming New Zealand Bloodstock Winter Mixed Bloodstock Sale at Karaka features a number of mares who are carrying foals by some of the country’s hottest young stallions.

Few fit that description better than Tavistock (NZ), whose first two crops to race have included Group 1 winners Volkstok’n’barrell (NZ), Tarzino (NZ), Tavago (NZ) and Werther (NZ). Three mares in the Winter Sale catalogue are in foal to the Cambridge Stud sensation.

Lot 18 is the winning mare Valtier, by Fastnet Rock. She is closely related to the multiple Singapore stakes winner Moon Shadow (Bellotto).

Lot 27 is Coral Reef, a winning mare by the global supersire Galileo. She has already produced a winner from two foals to race, and she is a descendant of the Irish Oaks winner Knight’s Baroness.

The trio of mares carrying Tavistock foals is completed by Lot 44, the Black Minnaloushe mare Jazzella (NZ). The Logan stable at Ruakaka trained the speedy bay to win six races, three at stakes level – the Group 3 Darley Plate, the Group 3 Cambridge Breeders’ Stakes and the Listed Gold Coast Silk Stocking. Jazzella is already the dam of one winner from one foal to race, the dual winner Harlem Lady (Zabeel).

Another enormously exciting young member of New Zealand’s stallion ranks is Westbury Stud shuttler Makfi, already the sire of Group 1 winners Sofia Rosa (NZ), Marky Mark (NZ) and Make Believe. Lot 3, the Marju mare Rationalize (NZ), is in foal to the Dubawi stallion. Herself a five-race winner, Rationalize is a half-sister to Victoria Derby winner Amalfi (Carnegie) and also to Petit Verdot (Carnegie), dam of stakes winners Antonio Lombardo (Pins) and Master Of Arts (Mastercraftsman).

Windsor Park Stud’s Group 1-winning sprinter Shamexpress is another exciting sire prospect. His progeny have been well received as weanlings this year, and two mares in the Winter Sale catalogue are in foal to him – lots 23 and 50.

Lot 23 is the winning Fastnet Rock mare Bettorock, whose dam Astounded (Encosta De Lago) was a multiple stakes performer in Australia.

Lot 50 is another winner, the Pins mare Melodic (NZ), who is already the dam of two winners from four foals to race. She comes from the family of Group One winners Black Mamba (NZ) (Black Minnaloushe), Tully Thunder (Thunder Gulch) and Roman Emperor (NZ) (Montjeu).

There are many other lots that are set to hold significant interest. Lot 12 is Sunalta (Rock Of Gibraltar), an unraced daughter of the legendary mare Sunline (NZ) (Desert Sun). Lot 13 is Sunset Stripper (Volksraad), a half-sister to the dam of Hong Kong megastar Werther (NZ) (Tavistock). Sunset Stripper is in foal to Albrecht.

Lot 67 is Thwayya (Snitzel), who won three times and was placed in the Listed Hamilton Vets Equine Stakes. She is being sold as a racing and breeding proposition.

Lot 73 is Espelette (NZ) (Stravinsky), a winner herself and a full-sister to the Group 2 winner Pure Harmony (NZ) (Stravinsky). She is also a half-sister to the Group 1 placegetter Galway Lass (NZ) (Rhythm).

Supplementary entries to the catalogue include a pair of black-type performers. Lot 77 is joint NZB Southern Filly of the Year winner Windborne (NZ) (Darci Brahma), being sold as a broodmare proposition. A full-sister to the Group One performer Darci’s Dream (NZ), Windborne won three races including the Listed Murdoch Newell Stakes and Canterbury Belle Stakes. She also ran third in the Group 3 Mr Tiz Trophy.

Lot 82 is Illuminati (NZ) (Keeper), being sold as a racing and breeding proposition. She is the winner of nine races including the Listed Rotorua Stakes and has placed in the Group 3 Winter Cup, White Robe Lodge Handicap and Cuddle Stakes.

Lot 79, Songstress (NZ) a two-year-old filly by the deceased champion sire O’Reilly, comes from the same family as 2003-04 New Zealand Horse of the Year King’s Chapel (King Of Kings), who won 10 races including the Group 1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas, Telegraph Handicap and Otaki-Maori WFA.
