Marju Snip becomes 17th Gr.1 Winner for NZB

1 May 2006

Karaka Premier Sale & Ready to Run Sale graduate, Marju Snip (Marju x Aulide), took top honours in South Australia on Saturday to notch up another Group 1 victory for NZB graduates.

Marju Snip became the 17th individual Group 1 winner for the New Zealand Bloodstock sale-ring this season, following success in the Group 1 Schweppes Oaks (2020m) at Morphettville on Saturday. An impressive turn of foot and a dream ride by jockey Steven Arnold secured the filly her sixth win from eight career starts.

Bred by Waikato Stud, Marju Snip becomes the fourth individual Group 1 winner for the Stud this season. Sold for NZ$52,500 at Karaka as a yearling, purchaser Graeme Sanders then successfully sold her at the New Zealand Bloodstock Ready to Run Sale to NSW bloodstock agent, Darrell Ible, for NZ$110,000.

Her dam, Aulide, is out of top racemare, Candide, dam of recent Gr.1 AAMI Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) winner, Nadeem (Redoute's Choice), and HKJC Stewards' Cup winner, Billion Win (Coronation Day).

At home in NZ, the Cambridge Jockey Club held their feature raceday at Te Rapa, where New Zealand Bloodstock sponsored two races on the card.

Early in the day, the familiar trainer/jockey combination of Rudy Liefting and Vinny Colgan combined to produce a win on promising filly, Surprizer Phew (Prized x Windsor Phew) in the New Zealand Bloodstock Insurance 1600. The trainer/jockey duo had success last season with New Zealand Bloodstock Filly of the Year, Justa Tad.

The Rogerson/Autridge trained, Chartreuse (St Petersburg x Imzadi) won the next on the card, the Listed New Zealand Bloodstock 2YO Fillies Stakes (1200m). Bred by Philip and Peter Vela, the filly's win provides Brighthill Farm's resident sire, St Petersburg, with his first black type from his first crop to race.

Matamata trainer Lance O'Sullivan took out the feature race at Te Rapa, the Group 3 Windsor Park Stud's Breeders' Stakes, with Bashful (O'Reilly x Mon Cheri). Paul O'Sullivan bought the filly at the 2004 Karaka Select Yearling Sale for NZ$30,000 from Waikato Stud's draft. This Sunday's National Weanling Sale at Karaka sees a Strategic Image colt out of Bashful's half sister, Chezasinga (Danasinga x Mon Cheri) offered by Te Runga Stud.
