Marquardt Marks Patinack's Karaka Debut

3 February 2009

Karaka Premier Sale graduate, Marquardt, franked her impressive trial form on Saturday with her debut win in the STC Theslipper.com.au 2YO Handicap (1100m) at Rosehill.

Coming from five lengths off the lead, the Jason Coyle-trained Marquardt (Sharmadal x Centrefold Angel by Centaine) gunned down the highly regarded Waterhouse runner, Manhattan Rain (Encosta de Lago), in the final 75 metres. Manhattan Rain - a half-brother to sire sensation Redoute's Choice - finished one-and-a-quarter lengths behind the NZ-bred filly, with that distance again to the third placed runner Cleanup (Dehere).

Raced by Patinack Farm principal Nathan Tinkler, Marquardt is one of 24 yearlings amongst their sale-topping $7,920,000 spend at Karaka last year.

The victory provided Patinack with their first city winner from their 2008 yearling sale purchases in Australasia.

Patinack's Racing Manager, Rick Connolly, says the operation is impressed with its Karaka crop.

"We've been to New Zealand for the past two years and found some quality youngsters on both occasions, and she's just one example. It was a good win and we're hopeful that she can take the next step and take on the better two-year-olds."

Patinack Farm was active at New Zealand Bloodstock's National Yearling Sales Series again this week purchasing four horses in the Premier session and four in the Select.

Marquardt was bred by the Little Avondale Trust and sold through their draft last year for NZ$100,000. She descends from Miamian, from whose daughters the late Keith Gudsell bred the likes of Ballroom Babe, Dandy Andy, Balmeressa and River Chant.
