Masquerade No Pretender in Soliloquy

29 September 2009

Three-year-old filly Masquerade proved she's no pretender when she displayed an impressive turn of foot in the Listed Soliloquy Lodge Stakes (1400m) at Ellerslie on Saturday to grab victory in the second race of the New Zealand Bloodstock Filly of the Year Series.

Having just her fourth start, the Stephen McKee-trained Masquerade (No Excuse Needed x Disguised by O'Reilly) swooped down the outside to reel in Posh Bec (Le Bec Fin x Silver Cent by Centaine) and win by a head. Securing four Series points for first, she now sits two points behind last week's Group 3 Windsor Park Stud & HB Breeders Gold Trail Stakes winner St Germaine who leads on six.

Miss Bindi (Don Eduardo x Yellow Brick Road by Soviet Star) ran home for third and sixth place on the table with one point.

Breaking maiden ranks in June, the Soliloquy was Masquerade's second start this preparation and takes her earnings for the Auckland Racing Club Winners Circle Syndicate No. 1.to $33,750

Bred on the same cross as the reigning NZB Filly of the Year Daffodil (No Excuse Needed x Spring by O'Reilly) she was bred by Waikato Stud principal, Garry Chittick.

There are eight races left in the Series with the next being the Group 1 New Zealand Bloodstock 1000 Guineas (1600m) at Riccarton on Saturday 14 November. Click here for a full list of nominated fillies.
