Muniandy Rides Inferno to Canterbury Cup Win

18 April 2011

Mark McNamara summed up Inferno's win in the Group 3 Coca-Cola Canterbury Gold Cup (2000m) beautifully as the mare crossed the line for a big win in the feature race; "what a gem of a ride from Shankar Muniandy".

Settled back second last in transit and looking no hope at the 600 metres, Muniandy opted to take the Brian & Shane Anderton trained Inferno (Yamanin Vital x Emerald Fire) on the inside of the field, as the majority of the runners went wide, looking for the best part of the track.

The move proved the winning of the race, with the five-year-old mare flying in the wet ground, powering away to a three-and-a-half length thrashing of the Cup field, leaving some good competitors, including the Auckland Cup winner Titch in her wake.

New Zealand Bloodstock graduates took the race trifecta with Don't Say Clang (Clang x Caramel Twist) and Royal Era (Zabeel x Tudor Era) running into the placings.

A competitive performer on the track, Inferno's win in the Group 3 Canterbury Gold Cup was her first black-type win and her eighth winning performance from 27 starts, her stakes earnings now exceeding $150,000.

Bred and owned by B J & Mrs L E Anderton, Inferno was offered at the 2007 South Island Sale by White Robe Lodge.
