New Zealand Bloodstock 2YO Handicap at Awapuni Tomorrow

16 December 2005

A select field of six runners will contest the New Zealand Bloodstock 2YO Handicap (1100m) at Awapuni tomorrow, on what is one of the club's biggest days of the year, with the feature event being the Manawatu Cup.

Windsor Park Stud has a strong interest in the race, which features two fillies with siblings entered through their draft at the up-coming National Yearling Sales Series.

The most experienced horse in the field is the Peter and Nikki Hurdle trained, Tiger Magic (Sandtrap x Modern Magic) who is unbeaten in two starts. Tiger Magic will have a change of rider in tomorrow's event, with class rider, Grant Cooksley taking the reigns after top apprentice, Kelly Myers, had piloted the son of Sandtrap to success at his first two outings.

Myers will ride the other Hurdle trained runner in the event, in Scenicwood (Woodborough x Scenic Bay), in what will be his second start. A half sister to Scenicwood by Black Minnaloushe will be offered at the Select Sale, through the draft of Windsor Park Stud.

From the Matamata stable of Mark Walker comes Princess Coup (Encosta de Lago x Stoneyfell Road), who will be ridden by Michael Walker tomorrow. Princess Coup finished fifth on debut, 3.3 lengths behind Tiger Magic, who she meets again tomorrow.

One of three runners on debut in tomorrow's race is the John Wheeler trained, Egmont Lass (Fuji Kiseki x Simply Aloof). A $40,000 purchase at the 2005 Karaka Sale, Egmont Lass finished second in a recent Waverly trial and is out of a half sister to Australian Group One winner, Always Aloof. A Montjeu half sister to Egmont Lass will be offered by Windsor Park Stud at next month's Premier Yearling Sale.

Others on debut include Mels Bad Boy (Howbaddouwantit x Calla Mel) and Adjective (Traditionally x Knauss), who becomes the second runner for freshman sire, Traditionally, who was represented by his first winner last week, in the listed winner, Chant (Traditionally x Chantenay).
