New Zealand Bloodstock Airfreight Stakes Sees Tonic With Winning Formula

24 February 2003

Saturday's New Zealand Bloodstock Airfreight Stakes (Listed, 1600m) saw Riccarton based 3YO Tonic (Blues Traveller x Sent To War) clear away in the final stages by 3 lengths to take the win over Magic Bow (Magic of Sydney x D'Or Veille) with Smiling Asset (College Chapel x Fragile Asset) a further neck away in third.

Trained in Riccarton by Peter and Dawn Williams, Tonic is now tied for the lead in the New Zealand Bloodstock Southern Filly of the Year Series with Southerner Flying Coup. Both fillies have 7 points, and with 3 races left in the series there are still plenty of points up for grabs and the opportunity for other fillies to scoop the notable title.

Tonic was purchased at New Zealand Bloodstock's 2001 Select Fillies Sale for $40,000 by Delahunty Farm's Peter & Tim Ryan.

Following the running of the New Zealand Bloodstock Airfreight Stakes the points table for the 2002-03 New Zealand Bloodstock Southern Filly of the Year now stands as follows

Flying Coup 7
Tonic 7
Magic Bow 3
Mighty Myrtle 3
Smiling Asset 1
The Jewel 1

The next race in the series is the New Zealand Bloodstock Insurance Stakes at Otago Racing Club on 30 March 2003.
